Failed Exam
#11
[QUOTE=mlwilliamsiv]Thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement, it is greatly appreciated.

I did notice in the TESC Program Planning Handbook that it does list Freshman College Composition with essay as an option for credit. I know that this is an old handbook so I'm going to send TESC an email on Monday to see if they can confirm this.

I failed the Civil War exam, I never did get up the steam to try again, but you'll try again with the Freshman comp- or maybe the TECEP. Oddly enough, I found the English questions VERY DIFFICULT. I'm fine on essays, so I felt good going in, but the questions were the "fingernails on a chalkboard" kind of thing for me....I cringe just thinking back about it.

I remember taking a class at TESC (Living in the Information Age) that required we pass these online skill builders. They were online quizzes- some in math, some in English. I thought the English quizzes were going to be the end of me. Here I was, taking these little 10 question quiz modules, and they were kicking my butt! For some reason, I had a difficult time with this one type of grammar (can't even remember it now) but I retook that sucker 12 times (really) and what eventually helped me pass, is that the questions started to repeat! So, I kept good notes, and eventually I earned that horrible 80% and moved onto the next section!

I have no moral to my story- just sharing your pain Wink

I guess the up side is that you didn't score a 39....at least with a 49 you can just say you had a bad day Smile

basically freshman composition with essay does not exist as a unique exam, the college board test description on their website is not clear and doesnot explain the whole process at all !! when you want to pass this test, in the drop down menu to chose the test on the Clep registretion screen (right after where you put your info and credit card number etc) you will notice that there is only ''freshman college composition'' as opposed to english composition with essay and english compostion without essay, what you need to do is to call clep with your proctor (test center guy or girl) the proctor has to first give his information( name, test center number etc..) then they will put you on the phone and ask you your credit card information and charge you 10 bucks, (charged by ETS not college board) after a week or two your proctor will receive 2 essay topics that you need to complet and the proctor has to send it to your school, meanwhile you can take the computer based multiple choice test whenever you want, the same day when you receive those essays or before but again on all the score paper and transcript you will see the mention freshman college composition period lol doesnt say with or without essay! and basically Its going to cost you 70$ college board and 10$ ETS + proctor fee and 1 week or 2 of your time waiting for the essays, so you got it I think after all these time, someone could answer my questions about this shady test and this wonderful person was myself Wink

Thank you for your contribution.

Very sorry to learn about your results Marshall. On a positive note, I can see that you've already dodged the bullet. As bat21 mentioned, you have plenty other options, and many of them aren't too bad. And since you've got the time, you can always re-take.

I remember I came very close to failing this one. Although I took it cold and in less than ideal conditions, I too thought this would be a walk in the park (took it without essay), I only passed with a 50, my lowest score ever. Besides being the cut score for passing, there's little difference between a 50 and the 49 you got in terms of proficiency. I can understand how you must've felt at the time, getting so close.

I'm sure it's going to be better the next time. Just keep knocking them down.

loredia Wrote:Sorry to hear that Marshall. Sometimes it is difficult to guage the exams. In many cases I received higher score on subject I was weaker in, and lover scores on the onces I usually excel in. I still don't understand it. I wish they gave a breakdown with the score report.

I totally agree with this. I have had a similar experience with CLEP tests so far.
The trick is to shake it off and know that you are a great student. Just look at how many credits you've earned in such a short amount of time. This is no small feat. You're learning and mastering information more quickly than many of your peers at B & M schools, and in less time. That ROCKS!

As for your options, I don't see a bad choice. Just depends on what takes priority for you- time, money, etc. I will say that even the best of writers benefit from frequent writing, so taking the actual class can't hurt. I you are planning on pursuing post graduate studies, expository writing will help prep you for that at as well.

Just remember that you are doing great and should be very proud of yourself! Just ask us- we'll all here to remind you! Wink

Thanks for having the guts to warn us about this exam. It's very helpful and I know it's hard to report. It especially helps those of us that are new to this to avoid going in overconfident.

Now......Back to the books!

Yeah it sucks:eek:

Maybe you can have someone else grade, the essay portion?

I am still studying for my English Clep W/Essay and now you did the proverbial " Vulcan Mind Trick" on me, I am wondering if I will get the same results also?

I need the clep to finish out my TESC Liberal Studies Degree. And I do not want to mess it up either.
