Failed Analyzing and Interpreting Literature Today :(
#1
Hey all,

I took my first Clep test today and came up just short. I finished with a 48 on the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature (50 passing). I really underestimated the amount of time that was allocated. I spent way too much time on the first half of the test and with about 7 minutes left I still had 20 questions and had to rush it which ultimately probably cost me from passing. I bought the study guide for this course but I didn't find it much help. Honestly given the material I didn't know of any good way to study poetry. To me it was either you understand it or you don't. None the less I am very disappointed today.

I am a college senior and English is probably my biggest weakness. I've been told I have the option to take "English Literature Clep" in the coming months. Unfortunately it appears to be much more difficult. My advisor has also recommended to take a traditional course for my 200 level English. However I can't bear the thought of a 12 week course and reading 3 novels and writing 10 papers. As a business professional finishing up college I just want to survive as this is the last of my general electives.

Does anyone have any good materials for the English Lit Clep? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!Cool

Despite this set back there is still hope.....hope that will be available to you in six months. I know, six months seems like a world away but it will pass quickly allowing you time to prepare and then conquer the beast.

Good Luck from now until then!

Sorry to hear about your score. Bummer. I just posted some exam specific feedback after my daughter passed this one [EL] yesterday. The challenge with the poetry from the EL test is not just knowing how to analyze, like what does this mean, but also 4-12 lines and the question is who wrote this. This test is difficult but if you crack the books, read more than one study source and take A&I practice exams it may be worth your time to give it a whirl.

Passed:

American Gov, US History 1, US History 2, Computing, Info Systems, Humanities, Sociology, Art, Western Civ I, Western Civ II, Social Sciences and History, Civil War, Business, Vietnam, A&I Lit, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, American Lit, English Lit, Astronomy, Supervision, 1 FEMA, Total -79

Don't sweat it. I barely passed this thing myself. There are many people out there that find this test to be the easiest. I found it to be very difficult. We just don't have that "lit" wiring upstairs. 6 months will come quick for you. If you would like my REA A+I Lit book w/CD, it's yours for free. Just PM me with the address. Hang in there. DON'T GIVE UP!!!Wink

Smile Smile What you learn from the failure will greatly help you in the future successes and will make them far more valuable to you.

You can try Bartelby and see if they have any resources that might help. I think i might have that Study Guide but I''ll have to check.

Hang in there! You will get all the things you are trying to get as long as you hang in long enough to be there to receive them.
Cool

One advantage to the English Lit CLEP is that a certain percentage of the test is fact-based--i.e., matching authors to their works or matching characters to titles. So if analyzing the poetry really throws you for a loop, if you study hard, you have a chance to gain a little ground if you know your lit facts really well.
