So I failed American Lit today. Got a 48. It seemed half the test was analyzing and interrupting poets or paragraphs. Apparently I really suck in that area. I guess I'm going to try English Lit now. It is the same thing but with different authors? Is it easier than American Lit? This is the last class I need to finish out my general ed classes.
Thanks
Dan

Well, that's because poets don't like to be interrupted milelol: j/k couldn't resist.
Sorry about the fail, that was a really close score. I failed an exam once too, it messes with your head.
I thought English lit was a lot harder than American, but that's probably because I hadn't really read anything from the English authors and HAD read a lot more in the American (back in high school). In my opinion, the American Lit was one of my harder exams (I took about 15) and I thought English was too hard to even try. Is there ANYTHING else you can take? If you need something from humanities, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature is much easier (it's a reading comp exam, not a fact/recall exam) and I've heard others say the general humanities exam was very doable. Both of those would also be 6 credit exams.

I second Cook's recommendation of A&I lit. Tech Writing could also be a good choice for Humanities or Gen Ed credits.

My school only takes American Lit or English Lit. for their literature category. After browse the forum, I think I'm just going to suck it up and take the class. I've passed 5 of the 6 CLEPS/DSST so I'm not too disappointed.

Bummer!! Well, if you only need a 3 credit course, I think you're making the right decision. If you need 6 credits (2 semesters) it might be easier to try for the English Lit after all. Good luck whatever you decide!

Sorry to hear about the fail. That is always disappointing. And so close, too.
The same thing happened to my brother. Recently, he took American Literature and got a 48. He, likewise, had trouble with analyzing and interpreting the paragraphs and poems. I think he also had some trouble with literary terms, although I had told him to make sure he studied those well.
I took English Literature a while ago. I decided to take it over American Lit. or Analyzing and Interpreting Lit. because it seemed easier to me. I had finished high school English Literature several months before so it was more fresh in my mind and I enjoy reading works from a number of English authors. It seemed doable to me, not the easiest, but not too hard, either. That was my very first CLEP and I passed with a 67.

I agree, both American and English Lit are two of the harder exams, unless its your area of expertise. If you received 48 on this exam, a&i shouldn't be a problem.

thanks for all the comments. I think I'm going to give English Lit a try. I'm military so it is free. Does anyone have a study guide they want to share? I'm definitely going to spend more time on analyzing and interrupting section.

It has been several years since I took the English lit exam but I seem to recall that close to 50% of the exam is Shakespeare. For me, that made it easy even though I was not very familiar with the other authors. I Used English Lit for dummies to study but that would not have been enough on its own had I not been familiar with Shakespeare.
