FREE Resources for Newbies/Newer members/Homeschoolers
#1
I was doing some research and I came across a few websites that I thought might be of help to some of the newer people to this forum or those who are still in the process of making their degree plans. I did a search and didn't see these sites listed so I hope they haven't been mentioned before. I tried to find out if these sites are run by someone from this forum, but couldn't find anything so I apologize if you already mentioned these in another thread.

Homeschool College USA - Homeschool College USA
This website looks like a great resource for homeschoolers as well as those in high school who want help for test prep. I noticed that a lot of the resources listed are those that are listed in the Specific Exam Feedback. It mentions the Big 3, ALEKS, Straighterline, and even Saylor.org. They go over an example degree plan and then they list resources and plans for most if not all of the tests. Like I said, it's geared more towards kids in high school who want to get dual credit. They have you make lesson plans, count hours, etc.

The University of You - Home
This site is a branch off of the previous site. It's geared toward anyone who wants to get a degree without spending tons of money! They show you a degree plan for a BA in Liberal Studies and then walk you through step-by-step of which tests/credits to get first, how much it should cost and about how long it should take you. They mostly have info on TESC, but it says that they will be working on collecting information on EC and COSC. If you need to create a different degree plan, they walk you through how to do it. I seriously wish I had found this site when I was planning my degree path.

So, I hope these will be helpful. From what I saw they looked like they had lots of good info for those just starting out on this journey. Smile This is just info to look into, not necessarily exactly what everyone should do. Keep in mind, every degree plan varies depending on many factors.

Thank IrishJohn for adding it to the wiki. Yeah, I had a hard time deciding what section of the forum to put my thread in....Maybe the second link could go under "The Basic Approach". I don't really know.....

My daughter is an occasional lurker here, and she just stumbled across this while checking links for me and said, "Hey, Mom! Somebody's talking about you on the InstantCert forum." I started to reply under her username and then thought I'd better just register myself. So... no, technically these sites aren't run by someone from this forum, as I've only just created an account.

Hmmmm. You know what? Having just said and done all that, I think I might have had an account here a few years ago. Eeek. Sorry for not investigating that further before creating a new one!

My actual point in posting a reply is that I wanted to let you know I decided to combine Homeschool College USA and The University of You into one big site that covers all the info from both. I was going to have to redo The U of U extensively in any case because all the sample plans are pre-LEAP as far as TESC's general education requirements go. They will need reworking once we know exactly what will be required.

Once the site is finished (It's about halfway there), I'll redirect The U of U's URL to the new HC USA, so regardless of what someone enters, they'll wind up in the same place. Thank you, IrishJohn, for posting the link on the wiki page and thanks, HorseManiac, too, for promoting the sites here.

You're welcome!! When I stumbled across your links, they looked really helpful so I thought others might benefit! Thanks for letting us know about the redesigning of the sites!!

Smile The new site is *very* much geared toward newbies in a sense. (I even have a page where I walk you through how to submit your ALEKS courses to ACE - with screen captures to show you each step.) I still have all the free study resources, too, but I'm actually trying to save my own sanity. I spend hours every week fielding emails asking for help, so I'm trying to build a site where I can just reply with, "Here. This page on my site should answer your questions."
