I've been reading a lot about people taking courses through FEMA. Are these free? Do they grant distance degrees? And what I can put FEMA Credits toward?

They are free, do not represent a degree (nor have ACE approval), and are transferable in different ways depending on the school. You'll want to search this site to find how they apply to your school and also see which ones are accepted by speaking with an adviser at your school. For me I can tell you that TESC takes somewhere in the range of 32 of them but the list changes. Other schools vary but you should expect them to be free electives (with few exceptions I've seen others mention).
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Do a search of "wiki" in this forum. Dcan has a really solid site that has lots of the basic information in one spot. If you're planning on a business degree, you might want to go for the PDS first. Lots of the topics will be ones you'll see in the managment test.
