Excited to be studying for CLEPs again!
#11
I received a very discouraging response from tesc about this second degree. They said to call the bursar and ask if I will have to pay the 2400 or so enrollment fee again. They also said that all 24 need to be new credits in the concentration which I sort of expected. I did think that my existing credits would also apply to the concentration. That's the whole point of this second degree for me. I want to ave recognition for the four calculus, two physics with lab and some other classes I took as an engineering major. I'll give them a call sometime soon to iron it out.

As long as you are within the same enrollment year you do not have to pay again they only need activate the new degree. Call the bursar to confirm.

Since that degree has 33 cr in the concentration you will be able to use 9cr from existing UL courses so you only need 3 UL exams/courses, 3 200 level exams/courses, and the NAT SCI clep.

And remember ALL of your coursework is included on the transcript. That's why I've taken extra credits outside degree requirements just so it is included on the transcript in case I can use it later. I actually ended up needing 42 credits for the BSBA to fulfill all requirements. Since most was testing combined with PF and SL it was super easy and fast. I dragged it out this long. I should have been done in January.

Maybe it's just me but I see the opportunity of earning a second degree for next to nothing as a great deal. Granted I look at this from a different viewpoint because my siblings all went to very good schools which equals high tuition (art center, princeton law, rutgers/douglass) so my budget degrees are a godsend to me.

ETA: I finally located the info for second assoc/bachelors - it was 15/30 new credits in 2009 then changed to 12/24 new credits in 2010. The difference was in the BSBA which stated 24 new in area study/core; which is again in the process of changing per the evaluation director (4/2011) to 18 new area of study/6 new core. Very messy and why I can't keep it all straight. At this point I will no longer offer advice, best I can offer is what I did and advise folks to call the school direct. It's just getting too dicey as changes are made along with the flexibility (or lack thereof) of different programs.

ryoder Wrote:Bricabrac i see you are planning on the msast. I am planning on taking two courses from that degree to serve as ul science credit. I hope to pay undergrad tuition rates. Have you started the process of getting undergrad rates for masters courses?

Ryoder,

No, I was not able to use masters courses towards BSBA. When I began the program the masters courses were full price and would have fallen under free electives because they are not business. At this point, I've completed all courses and am now preparing for the final 3crs -business policy tecep.

So I start the clinical trial program in October and since it matches perfectly with my professional background I'm looking forward to it. On a side note, just over the past month I've confirmed having degrees and work experience in multiple areas is a huge benefit so I will most likely pursue another masters (MBA) and or grad cert after the CTM degree. Like you, I've officially turned into an education addict! Big Grin

Ryoder when is your enrollment up? I completed my 1st BA in May 2010 and enrolled for 2nd BA in June 2010. My Enrollment period goes from Oct.31 to Oct. 31 so I did not need to pay more until Oct 31, 2010. At that time my DH was unemployed and I did not have the cash for a full years enrollment so I just extended and paid for 1 month. I di this again in Nov. and Dec. In Jan 2011 I decided to go for the whole years enrollment. I live in NJ so I had been paying $200 a month so I only needed to pay an additional ~$600 and that covers me until Oct. 31 2011.

Also ;I need the new credits in my concentration too but they did give me DSST History of the Vietnam war as an upper level in my concentration and I took that years ago for my 1st BA

Thanks for the info and encouragement guys.
Bricabrac, I feel the same way as you. This site and the CLEP/DSST/SL.com world have made me an education junkie as well. And thanks for spelling it out clearly.

Linda - thanks for the point about your dsst

Here is my plan according to what has been said here.
For the concentration of 33 cr. where I need 6 UL and 18 additional

6 CR Natural Science CLEP (100 level)
6 CR Anatomy & Physilogy (200 level) from SL.com
6 Credits upper level (TBD, could be environmental science, comp sci, or MSAST which I would prefer since its graduate level)
6 CR of 200 level ------ NEED HELP HERE, TEST OUT, Penn Foster?? StraighterLine?

Those last 6CR of 200 level are a problem. I wonder what classes are out there. I could suck it up and take 2 TESC classes but of course I want to test out or do an at your own pace option. I would also consider a guided study option.

Hi Ryan,

"6 CR of 200 level ------ NEED HELP HERE, TEST OUT, Penn Foster?? StraighterLine? "

In regards to the last line you actually need split into 3 CR 300/400 and 3 CR 200 level. Linda's program is from an early time (2005) when 200 level was considered upper level.

Below is a tecep or dantes you could take for the 200 level. Maybe check into ECE exams and or TESC epack courses. Outside of exams PF would probably be the easiest just more expensive.

DSST ENS201 race to save the planet
TECEP BIO208 science of nutrition

Geezer's posts also have lots of CIS/CS suggestions.

Bricabrac that is great information.
I'll do the DSST since it is graded much faster than the TECEP but if I fail it (doubt it) I'll take the TECEP.

Cost is not much of a concern so Penn Foster is a good idea.
I wonder what level PF Visual C# is. I know C# like the back of my hand so I can rip through that in a couple of days.

Ryan are you planning to take the TESC Global Environmental Change? It is available Guided Study or On-line. I found the range of the course interesting and it made the Race to save the planet DSST easy ( yes TESC takes both). The course is 6 upper level credits and it is not 2Xs the work or difficulty if you pick the right mentor.

I will either take that or two MSAST courses if they allow it at the undergrad rate. I would rather do the graduate courses since the network security one should be simple for me and any of the others are interesting too.
But that 6cr course is most likely my fallback.
Another option is 2 300 level computer science courses like computer organization COS-330 or COS-352 operating systems.
If I am forced to take a course I might as well get some more comp sci credits.

Did you do guided study? How was that? I prefer to work alone on tasks and submit them for a grade and I would rather have assignments, not tests.

I did On-line for this course, I would not recommend it. The papers and test were not bad it was responding to the people on discussion boards that made me nuts. Some of the people had no science background and would go off on tangents having nothing to do with the question. Some were closed mind and did not want to hear a different opinion or question "Data" they had read. I am a sceptic at heart and do not believe any data I read, it is to easy to make data say anything you want it to. We had very little feedback from the mentor and after my grades were lower when I disagreed with her opinion I learned to tow the line. I ended up with an A and I did learn a lot. If I had it to do over again I would do it Guided study. My only other TESC course was Guided study and I ended up being the only one who didn't drop after 3 weeks. I got great feedback from the teacher and I did not have to respond to meaningless discussion questions.
