Excelsior or Thomas Edison
#1
Hey guys, I have accumulated 78 credits with cleps and dantes and am interested in obtaining an Accounting degree. I have checked out both Excelsior and Thomas Edison State College. My 78 credits are mostly core classes and a few upper credits as well. I really like the sound of the enrolled options plan at TESC. What do yall think? Im going to need 39 more credits(im about to take a 3 credit dantes to give me 81) Here's some math I figured up:

TECEP examniations
Annual Enrollment Fee=$2858
30 credits @ 33 a credit hour= $990
3 courses at $212 a credit hour=$1908
Graduation Fee, Application Fee, Course registration fee=$400

This all comes to $6156.00 Without including books. Anybody have any idea how much books will cost?
This price sounds a lot better than the $9000-10,000 price the guy(who was really helpful) at Excelsior quoted me. What is your opinion?

I'm with EC and have been pretty happy with it, but I'm also using the GI Bill so cost isn't a factor for me.

As for books, average cost is about 135USD per class if buying new (according to EC, and VA gives 125/class so sounds about right). Textbooks.com (buy new/used or rent for less) and Coursesmart.com (rent, for 6 months, online copies at about 1/3 the cost) are the best resources I've found... outside of not so legal methods of obtaining digital copies of books.

I like both schools as you can see. But go with the one that will save you money.
I've only used Amazon for my books. I always buy them used. The cheaper the better. Sometimes they come highlighted with the parts you need to concentrate on. hilarious

I have used Excelsior and been happy. When I investigated TESC they charged more for persons who were not residents of New Jersey. That made it cost more than Excelsior.

I agree, you need to make sure your situation applies and go with what saves you money.

Seems it is the masters level where the school you choose may make a difference, depending on where you work and the field you choose.

For Masters level I'd look at Western Governors Uni (WGU) if you want business, teaching, or IT. Cheap (around 3k USD/6 months, depending on program), self-paced, regionally accredited.
