Excelsior no longer accepting graded term paper to waive research and writing req?
#1
I sent my academic advisor a message about waiving the 1 credit research and writing requirement with a graded term paper and was told that Excelsior no longer accepts written papers for this requirement. Has anyone else had this problem? I've seen on different threads circa 2008 that this was still a viable option to opt out of this requirement.

Thanks in advance. Smile

Yes, Irnbru ran into this issue a year ago. I can't find the post right now, but I think he won his appeal. It probably helped if he was enrolled at the time of the change. Here is one of his posts about the situation (second paragraph):

Hi inky,

The Research and Writing waiver is not available for students who enrolled on and after 1 July 2011. If your enrolment/student policy date is before this, then you should be able to appeal it, as I did.

As previously discussed, this means that current EC students need to sit 6 cr with the college;

Information literacy (1 lower level credit)
Research and Writing (2 upper level credits)
Capstone (3 upper level credits)

It's worth looking into the partnership schemes with the 12 credit residency as a result.

Hope this helps,

irnbru

Hi Irnbru!

I am so glad you saw and replied to this topic.

I think your point about the different enrollment option is valid. A few other things to consider: It is still possible to transfer in Info Lit. Also, Research & Writing in the major course is 1 UL credit for 8 weeks, is not required for Liberal Studies, and is satisfied through the capstone course for some majors. (See the Liberal Arts catalog for more and current details.)

Which major are you completing Inky86?

Thanks for the catch, things change so quickly and I'm already well out of date Smile

Checking the LA Handbook, page 13 states that,

"Students who are communication, criminal justice or history majors will satisfy their research and writing requirement in their capstone course. They do not need to take a separate course."

Which might help anyone on this board looking at history.

I just learned about that today, too. With so many changes in the past few years, it has been difficult to stay up-to-date.
