Excelsior Information Literacy course
#1
Since it seems I need to bite the bullet and take this course, does anyone have any helpful hints? How exactly does it work- Do I need to wait until the month begins to start (May registration)? Does it take a whole semester to complete, or can it be finished early? Any insights are appreciated!

Hey,

You will have to wait for the semester to start. From there, there are several modules to do. They are self-paced, so you can take as long or as quickly as you like. I finished it in a day or two.

As soon as you take the easy test, they will submit the pass/fail and you will be done.

Some of the information is actually interesting. Enjoy.

I haven't taken the course myself, and have registered to start in May; the schedule shows the course is supposed to end at the end of August.

Can all the modules be done concurrently, or is there a schedule dictating when each one is to be taken? I gather from what you're saying that I can begin the modules on May 1st and be finished by May 7th once I take the exam?

Thanks for the info!

Hi Guys,

I registered for, paid for, studied for, and passed this course in one evening. It is absolutely nothing to be scared of.

You order and pay for the course online. Access to the course material is instantaneous, and you can take the final exam whenever you are ready. There is no requirement to wait until a certain month to take the course.

Hope that helps,

Snazzlefrag,
Did you register when the course had officially begun? I am registered for the course that starts on May 1st, and it doesn't show up on my Course List on WebCT. I guess I have to wait.

Thanks for the info., one less thing to worry about. Wink

Hi Anar,

I know that when I registered there was no start date or finish date. I simply paid the money and began reading the information. However, I do remember that I ordered on a date AFTER the course start date. So I think they may put a start date on the course for some reason. But it certainly is not a course that takes months, weeks, or even days to complete. I literally ordered the course at 4pm and had it finished about 11pm that same night.

Basically, you log in and click on the first module. Read the information and take the simple module quiz. Then move on to the next module.

You can retake the module quizzes an unlimited number of times if necessary (they do not count towards your grade but you MUST pass each one to move on to the next module).

The final exam was fifty questions. The questions were VERY straightforward. If you have read the material you will be able to answer the questions. It's not really necessary to memorize anything or study intensely like you do with CLEPs and DANTES etc.

The questions you encounter on the module quizzes are exactly the same difficulty level as the final exam (in other words....easy peazy!)

You can also print out the module notes for reference...or just open up each module in a separate browser window and keep them open for the final exam so you can double check any questions that you are unsure about.

Seriously, this is not ANYWHERE near the level of difficulty of a CLEP or DANTES.

I came out with a 98% but it is pass/fail. By far the easiest one credit you will ever earn...and also probably the most expensive. I can't believe I had to pay $260 for it. But you have to do what you have to do!

I think I would have preferred them to charge $260 more for enrollment and just offer the Info Lit course free....because it really is not at the same difficulty level as any other credits you will earn. It is basically just a guaranteed income source for the college! A bit of a rip off really. But I can't complain too much because the overall cost of a degree from Excelsior is so much less than what I would pay for a conventional degree.

Bottom line....this course can be completed from start to finish in a few hours, and the final exam is nothing to be anxious about at all. Just make sure you read all the information in the modules, and then go for it.

This was the first credit I earned way back in November. I was nervous as can be about taking the final exam because I didn't know what to expect. So I know how you are feeling. Trust me!

hilarious

Best of luck,

Just wondering if you have to take it at the beginning of a semester? When I took it you could register and take it anytime during the year - just wondering.....

ShotoJuku,

I think because it is a COURSE and not JUST an ECE exam, they have to offer it on a per semester basis. So if you register for the course by May 1st, you have UP TO a whole semester to complete it. But you can register at any time after that date up until the end of the semester (when a new start date begins).

I think my start date said September. But I only registered in November and, as I said, I was able to complete it in one evening.

There may be a cut off point towards the end of each semester when they no longer accept registrations, and those students would therefore have to wait until the start of the next semester.

So, while technically it is a semester-long course and it is offered on a semester basis, there is virtually rolling registration throughout the semester. Once registered, the course can be completed at your own pace in one day or a whole semester if need be.

Hope that makes sense!
