This is a review of Excelsiorâs Liberal Studies Capstone (LA498LS) course for Bachelor of Science - Liberal Arts. It was my first and last Excelsior course. I got an A.
Good: No textbook and very little reading. I got high grades with ease.
Bad: A ton of writing. Two posts a week of 250 â 300 words, 3 long papers and a voice over PowerPoint. It is easy to fall behind in this class, make sure you have enough time to devote to the course. I disliked the courseware software; it was a headache to navigate.
I recommend studying for some intro level social science courses or exams prior to this course as a foundation. Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, HR, and also Graphic Design⦠There was a lot, but at an intro level.
If you enjoy writing this course should be a breeze. I hate writing :-( There are no lectures, the instructor only moderates the message board and grades your work. My instructor gave a lot of leeway in topic selection for papers, and did not require students to have topics approved beforehand. The instructor seemed to be just mailing it in. The instructor did not take off any points for APA format mistakes. The message board was a pain, asinine topics and you had to comment on others posts.
Overall this class left a bad taste in my mouth, for Excelsior. I did not learn anything and jumped through a long series of annoying hoops.

That's because capstones are stupid. TESC's liberal arts capstone sounds doubly stupid. It's supposed to culminate your degree, but you can write about anything. What good does it doe a natural science major to write about poverty?

I dropped out of this the first time I signed up for it and have to re-sign up and do it again. I just need a C or better to graduate for it is my last requirement. I hit the wall when it came to trying to get the first essay together. "You have got to be kidding me with this crap," was all I could say....

I was lucky enough to graduate before the capstone requirement, and I did fine in my masters program.
