Ed Dept brokered 90/10 rule changes
#1
What the heck, I think the new rules are to prohibit for-profits from getting revenue using student federal aid and so on... I believe it's a good idea, but still I don't think this will stop for-profits from using their marketing strategies to target prospective students. It may be a step in the correct direction though, hopefully some other options will come through in the next little while...

Looks like it just means that 90% or less of the students can have a Pell grant. How many students had a Pell grant before this ruling? 90% of anything really isn't restrictive.

Hmm so now we should ban marketing under any circumstances?

Have you seen the large marketing budget for SNHU?  What about Purdue Global? Plenty of other Nonprofits with large recruitment and marketing budgets.

Maybe we stop paying coaches $10 million a year. Is the purpose of kids going to school to watch sports or to get an education? What about the presidents of these non-profits getting multi-million dollar salaries?

How deep down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

Currently, for-profit colleges are allowed to include military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, in the 10% calculation, which has led some institutions to aggressively recruit veterans. But Congress passed a law last year forcing colleges to include all federal education funds on the 90% side, starting in 2023.

GI Bill benefits aren't Title IV funding.

Maybe a handful of students under COVID guidances, probably fewer attending for-profit institutions. I'm not sure I see your point.

Curiosity. I've never been offered work study as an online student even with a Pell grant. I was wondering if it's ever offered to online students.

I misinterpreted your tone then. I'm sorry!

It might be that the schools didn't have FWS funding, since it's only offered at 3400 institutions: https://www2.ed.gov/programs/fws/index.html

That means there are about 3000 institutions with Title IV funding but not necessarily FWS: https://nces.ed.gov/FastFacts/display.asp?id=84

The largest alteration to the 90/10 rule reflects a recent change in federal law. Currently, for-profit colleges are allowed to include military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, in the 10% calculation, which has led some institutions to aggressively recruit veterans. But Congress passed a law last year forcing colleges to include all federal education funds on the 90% side, starting in 2023.

I'm wary of putting some arbitrary limit on financial aid schools can receive. This seems like this would affect colleges that serve low-income and minority students.

I didn't have a tone. LOL I copied and pasted from the article then posted a question. But thanks for the apology Smile

Weird that schools only half of schools have work study. I always thought it was just part of the process for everyone in the income guidelines like Pell.
