Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) closing. Anyone affected?

Apologies if this was posted during my hiatus from the board. I did a search both here and with a couple external search engines and didn't see anything, so I'm posting it now:

This has been a struggle for some families who were working towards associate's degrees through the labor unions' free college programs. Once the free college programs ended, the per credit tuition at EGCC made continuing super expensive. The college is closing completely, so ... Some family members have thrown their hands in the air, some were only one or two classes short of a degree and are looking to transfer to an Ohio college to complete the degree online. But it looks like the options even within Ohio are limited, and very expensive for out-of-state (except maybe Washington State College of Ohio? $170/credit in-state and $171/credit out-of state). Pierpont Is an option for the ones that don't already have associates or bachelors degrees, but some do and were working toward additional specialized associates degrees in a specific career field.

Just curious if anyone on this board has been affected and if they have tried completing their degree elsewhere (other than Pierpont).

Well this is unfortunately, but it looks like the administration was not following Title IX regulations. The feds don't mess around when it comes to finances.

If some of the students already have a bachelor's degree, what associate degree were they pursuing which would give them leverage over a bachelor's degree? Free tuition isn't something that typically lasts long term so people need to make sure they can afford the tuition for the program when it's no longer free.

Paralegal was one. And I think EGCC had an associates in social work? I think that's what my sister-in-law was doing in order to get the basic social work courses and then continue somewhere else for certification. (Sorry I'm foggy, that one I got through the grape vine as we don't get the chance to talk much. But she wants to do social work.)

Oh that's a bummer! Maybe they could transfer to UMPI and complete the BLS with a Pre Law Minor for the paralegal one and the BLS with a minor and the Human Services certificate for the other.

Thanks! I'll let them know about those programs. Hopefully they won't see the self-paced nature of the courses as a drawback.

I also saw nationalparalegal.edu mentioned elsewhere on this board, but wasn't sure if the DEAC accreditation would be an issue when trying to get jobs, so didn't know whether I should recommend it.

ETA: Scratch that last comment! Tuition for the associate degree from National Paralegal College is $325 per credit. That's insane for an NA school.

Law Shelf is what I was thinking of initially. I looked at their website and their part of the same parent system as National Paralegal College. So a bachelor's through them is possible for less $$$, but it's still NA. I wonder if TESU accepts these credits.

Interestingly, the price for a paralegal certificate at national paralegal is much cheaper per credit if you pay up front --45% off. Which leads me to wonder if anyone has ever completed the certificate (they do accept transfer credits, so that could cut the cost further) and then used their discounted certificate classes toward a paralegal associates degree at National Paralegal.

IDK if that made any sense. It did in my head.

But it's still theoretical as I'm not sure about the DEAC accreditation for job searching purposes.

While the National Paralegal College is NA, they are a part of the National Association of Legal Assistants and you can sit for the Certified Paralegal exam.

Couldn't hurt to try and then possibly level up with a bachelor's degree from TESU since they accept Law Shelf credits. I haven't seen them accepted at UMPI.
