ECE English Comp vs. CLEP Freshman College Comp vs. CLEP English Comp
#1
At Excelsior, I realize only the ECE English Comp will fulfill the Written English Requirement (WER).

However, will they also award credit for either of the CLEP exams Freshman College Composition or CLEP English Composition, or is this considered duplicate credit?

And what's the difference between those two CLEP exams? I've read the descriptions on the College Board website, and I still don't get it...

Sorrry I have so many questions, but I say THANKS to all you Excelsior Experts!!

The CLEP English tests will be counted as humanities credit, although if you took both they likely would only take one and write the other one off as duplicate. If you're going to Excelsior, there are easier ways to get humanities credits though. CLEP A&I Literature, for instance.

I don't know what the difference is...I thought there was only one CLEP English.

Hope that helps a little.

Thank you!

That definitely helps! I was afraid they would count ANY of the CLEP Comp exams as duplicates of the ECE English Comp.

I figured if I'm already studying for the ECE Comp exam (to satisfy the WER), then I could crank out another 6 credits with one of the CLEP comp exams.

(I already have CLEP Analyzing Lit in my plan, though.)

Thanks again!

One satisfies (Freshman Comp) lower level year English comp with some schools, and (English Clep w/essay) will satisfy other schools. Both exams may be done with or without essay, it depends on your school. and both exams are worth 6 units in English Comp.BUT,,EC will not accept them for the WER requirement only TESC will accept them.

Thanks for the reply, bat21!

So EC definitely awards 6 hours of credit for one of the CLEPs in addition to their ECE English Comp exam?

If you want to go cheaper than an ECE, I'd recommend Straighterline's English Comp I or II (transferred to Fort Hays). If you do it in a month, it's $99 for the SL subscription, $30 for the Fort Hays application (transfer of credit is free), and $5 for the transcript when you're done.

Longer than a month though, and you are probably looking at more expense than the ECE test.
