EC Tuition Increase for Fall 2009

Well, pretty much every college increases their tuition on an annual basis, so this wasn't much of a surprise. I just got the following information in an e-mail form EC:



"Excelsior College’s commitment to make college affordable for working adults remains strong.

Realizing the economy has impacted everyone, effective with the 2009 – 2010 terms, there will be a small increase of fifteen dollars per credit for undergraduate and graduate courses.

According to the College Board's 2008-2009 Annual Survey of Colleges, public four-year colleges increased tuition and fees by 6.4 percent, private institutions by 5.9 percent, and public two-year colleges by 4.7 percent over 2007 – 2008. Excelsior College’s average price increase for 2009 - 2010 is only 1 percent.

Providing quality education within your means has always been a primary concern for Excelsior College. During this difficult period, this minimal cost change allows us to continue to offer programs, services, and support you have come to depend upon."



An additional fifteen dollars per credit isn't too bad. However, if anyone's planning to take courses in fall or thereafter, you may want to budget accordingly.

I would not take a class from EC they are labor intensive and can be done cheaper elseware, in my humble opinion anyway.

We all hate increases, but this appears to be a *sane* increase.

If you look around, you will find a number of colleges shifting the burdon to their out of state students by jacking up their non-resident rates by 30 percent or so. That messes up the whole educational landscape in this country by preventing students from attending colleges outside their area. I don't even see what it accomplishes, since NY residents pay more in PA, and PA residents pay more in NY.

I also agree with the above statement about taking courses at EC. You are better off buying an REA book with practice tests for $30, or buying the EC practice tests for $65. There are just so many other sources of university media these days, such as Youtube, Podcasts, etc., that allow you to tune in to a expert's lecture. It all comes down to whether or not you are comfortable with an all-or-nothing final as a DSST, instead of a series of tests along the way.

If one has tuition reimbursement, the POAG/NLPOA partnership deal at EC makes 9 credits from EC look pretty attractive. They probably have to be the right 9 credits.

Yeah, a second for that POAG discount. Check out Peace Officer Association of Georgia - Representing The Peace Officer's of Georgia and click on Excelsior to see the discounts. You can subscribe as a civilian associate for $20 through paypal. The caveat is that you must take a total of 12 credits from EC as COURSES, or you owe the discount money back at graduation.

I was a member and used it as a way to defer my enrollment fees until graduation. It is kind of like a really cheap loan if you don't intend to take the 12 credits of courses.. With the POAG discount you save around $600 on your enrollment. If you already paid enrollment join POAG and get EC to refund the difference. I have heard of others doing that with success. (they also give you a nice gold poag police badge sticker for your window)

If your job is paying all of your educational expenses, don't do the POAG thing. It may leave you on the hook for paying back the discounts at graduation time if you don't meet the 12 credit requirement, and your company parts ways with you.

I bet them POAG guys and girls are banging their heads against the wall trying to figure out why so many people from out of state are signing up. You might see them on CNN talking about how their web presence increased their revenues by 400%, LOL!

Well, I am very equal opportunity, and I considered NLPOA. Then I discovered that POAG was $40 cheaper. POAG gives you a really nice 10 cent sticker for your car, and a laminated card made on an epson printer. EC made me withdraw from my POAG membership prior to graduation since I did not meet the 12 credit course minimum.
