As honorary doctorates go this is one of the more deserved ones.

Am I saying this out of skepticism about honorary doctorates, or out of respect for Tay? Both.

She does have dozens and dozens of music awards. Like her music or not, she writes music, writes lyrics, produces music, directs music videos, etc. Seems like someone who has actually earned an honorary degree because she actually did numerous things in that industry for many many years.

She lives in NYC. NYU launched a class on her in January and it filled up almost instantly. NYU is giving her the honorary degree. There's some sort of relationship established between them.

It's an honorary DFA degree, I don't see the issue. Much less deserving people have received them. It's not like she's actually going to claim to be an academic based on this.

I'm dying from the "I'm Feeling 22 Graduation Collection" she's released to celebrate "graduating." This HAS to be a first. Has anyone ever directly monetized an honorary doctorate by releasing merchandise for it?

As a commencement speaker, she has a job to do delivering a memorable event that celebrates the graduating class. Looks like she's doing it!

Aside from honoring the accomplishments of the honorees, these sorts of awards are designed to tie the new doctor to the institution for the purposes of fund raising.  I'll bet that Dr. Swift will being pulling in some serious bucks at the next university gala.

When Vogue had their 73 questions interview with her about 5 years ago, she stated she wanted an honorary doctorate because Ed Sheeran has one and looks down on her for not having one. Based on that quote alone, I imagine she thinks it's a legitimate degree. I don't think honorary doctorates are appropriate in most situations. I love her and her music, but if she really wants to be proud of something, she should earn a legitimate degree. She has previously urged her fans to go to school and said she planned on going to college, but never did. Not saying she needs to, but I don't know. I don't like it.
