Does a study.com course effect GPA, or it is it CR on transcript
#1
Hello, I hope everyone is doing well,

My question is, do study.com courses that are transferred to TESU effect the GPA or does it only show as CR (credit).

Has anyone done this recently?

Thank you

You have an institutional GPA (courses taken at that specific school, e.g., TESU), and an overall GPA (all courses taken at every school).

No transfer credit will ever affect your TESU institutional GPA, whether it's from another college or an ACE provider. However, all alternative credit comes in as a grade of "CR", meaning it doesn't even affect TESU's display of your 'overall' GPA.

ACE credit is ungraded credit at TESU - it doesn't affect your grade in any way (good or bad).

At TESU, it will only show as a CR on the transcript. However, if you plan to apply to a Master's program then they may want to see the original SDC transcripts to calculate a GPA. So, just in case, you may want to put in extra effort to pass your courses.

This is a completely new piece of info - I've never heard this from anyone for the 10+ years I've been on here.  I'm more of a "nobody will ever see it, so pass and move on" type of person.  I would never tell someone to spend extra time on an ACE course, except for the amount of time needed to learn the material they think they need to learn (obviously a business major would spend more time on those core courses and less time on the GE's for instance).

If anyone on here has ever had a master's program want to look at their ACE transcripts, I'd love to hear about it.

It's come up a couple of times in the past few months in the Graduate degrees section of the forum. I don't remember who or what school(s) but they had to send their SDC and/or Sophia transcripts because they didn't have sufficient traditional credits to calculate a GPA from.

I saw that thread about a Masters degree program wanting ACE or Study.com transcripts.

In addition, if you plan to apply to law school, LSAC apparently will want to see your Study.com grades.

I think there was at least one other situation mentioned on the forum. An undergrad program wanting actual Study.com grades?

Yeah, there are a number of schools (again, I'm not sure how many) that will want to see your grades at SDC for an undergrad degree. This does not apply to any of the big 3 or to UMPI (I think) but it may apply to (some) WGU degrees. I seem to remember someone posting about this and being confused because WGU doesn't give a grade themselves but they wanted to see transcripts with grades.

Brandman requires at least 81.5% on ACE credits for transferability.

So if we're talking about a VERY limited number of schools, I'm not sure we want to tell people who may not ever go to those schools, to take this into account. I mean, what a time-waster for a very small number of people it will affect. OMG.

I'm going to stick with my current advice to just take the ACE/NCCRS courses, get the grade you get, and move on. I'm guessing that people that are barely passing with a 70% and just want "any degree" aren't going to worry about grad school much.

I think the best advice would be to think about your end goals. If you do plan on going to grad school then you may want to put in extra effort. There has been at least one person who lamented not putting more effort into their Sophia classes because they didn't think it'd matter later.

It absolutely can.

Always telling people to rush through and not think at all about the future at all is bad, bad advice. Especially when we don't know what a person wants a degree for or what school they're planning to attend. Sometimes, people want a "quick degree" so that they can get a Master's as soon as possible. Maybe they can get a 70% in SDC classes with 0 study but they could get 80 or 90 with 5 hours of study. Is it worth it to put in those extra study hours? Maybe!

Brandman is sometimes suggested for things like their BSIT. I would hate to find out that someone here was unable to get a Brandman degree after being told that their SDC classes NEVER matter.
