I work in education. This is so true. I am not a teacher, but I know they have a TON of demands on them day in and day out. And parents often make the job even harder. And there’s a huge shortage in roles related to special education. (Psychologists, OT, Speech, PT, Intervention Specialists).

The lack of proper compensation doesn't help when it comes to filling empty teacher roles. If you only get $36k to start AND you have to purchase classroom supplies, you either have to be stupid, doing it for ideological reasons, or a sadist in it for the power trips. There are plenty of good teachers, but also a lot of them who are only in it to bully children.

Masks have been mandated in schools here for the whole school year until this week. That caused a lot of problems. There were shortages of teachers, aids, bus drivers, support staff such as cafeteria workers and janitors before Covid. Many people left the public education sector when they went to remote learning in 2020. Schools here have had multiple days off this school year because of bus driver shortages. Schools are now realizing that they can't pay bus drivers minimum wage and no benefits and call them a part time employee especially when they can't have a job in between the morning and afternoon runs. Who also wants to deal with the way kids are today? Who wants to deal with the way the parents are today? Who wants to work in an environment where you must practice school shooting drills? Nope. Not enough money in the world for that job. Here you need a master's degree and 2 licenses to become a teacher...starting pay is around $50k at some local schools. Nope not for a job with a master's degree where I could get shot at. No thanks.

Yeah the area I work bus drivers starting pay is now $20/hr to start and they even pay for your CDL (the special license you need to drive a bus). And you don't even have to work for them a certain amount of time to get paid CDL or no commitment to stay with the company.

So apparently some of the new applicants are leaving once they are done with CDL training and taking a job as a truck driver or somewhere else since CDL's are in demand.

One of my jobs is booking buses for athletics. It is REALLY hard to find buses during peak times. When teams need to get to an away game before 5:00 PM, they may or may not have a bus,

I have added two teachers here in my department. They are easy to train, and we pay more money with great benefits in the semiconductor industry.

The time/cost to get degrees and certifications to teach, or many other jobs in education, usually do not warrant the pay. Unless you are in an educational position where “it’s just a little more,” why would someone put in the time, effort, and money to get a masters degree to get paid $60k at a community college to be a counselor, or get a bachelors degree AND a teaching credential to make $45k to teach in an elementary school? Don’t get me wrong, those are decent salaries depending on the job, but do you really need a masters degree to figure out what classes a community college student needs to take to get the degree they want? And if you have a masters degree, shouldn’t it be worth a little more than $60k/year in California?

I am currently going through alternative teacher certification training, since I already have a degree. After working in the private sector, I find it hilarious how much teachers complain.

1) the pay is up there for all to see; to complain about the pay when you KNOW before you ever get a degree what jobs pay is just silly; and the lowest pay is for teachers getting their certifications, with no experience
2) guaranteed pay raise every year
3) bump in pay for 18 grad level credits, no matter what they're in - and most states have very inexpensive courses geared just for this - so my state allows me to take grad credits for $225/course, making it $1350 to get a $2000/yr bump in pay
4) another bump in pay for your master's degree, no matter what it's in - about $4000/yr
5) only about 190 days of instruction per year, so about 50 days less than non-teachers in our district; that's a LOT of days off in my book
6) every holiday off, summers, lots of 3-day weekends, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week at Thanksgiving, 1 week at spring break - I feel like I'm constantly getting a day off (because I am!)
7) additional days off for sick/personal time

I'll admit, I did buy a few supplies on my own - but I did it because I wanted to, because I didn't want to wait for the time it would have took to go through the office, do paperwork, etc. I don't really care, if I get hired as a teacher full time, I'll probably spend a little bit to hang some crap on my walls and whatnot. But I don't anticipate doing much - I can build it up over time. I can't imagine spending more than $100/yr.

I like the kids! Dealing with high schoolers is nice. I've started to form nice friendly relationships with some, have some that hate my guts, and everything in between. If you don't like kids, don't become a teacher. But I think I can make a difference in some of their lives at some point.

I don't know - so many complaints. I don't get it. I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into before I started, and it's actually better than I thought it would be. No complaints here, just opportunities and learning experiences. I'm enjoying myself.
