Not sure.  I noticed on my profile I can see that I referred people here, but I don't know how.

You probably had a Degreeforum link on your Homeschooling site. My guess is that visitors to that site clicked on the link and it records those visits as referrals.

I do have links on my website that direct people here, but they aren't linked to *me* (http://www.degreeforum.net).  
BUT, I have a coupon code for $5 off that I've posted on my website many many times, but I can see the stats and data for it on my end. It has been clicked thousands of times. My referral link here only has 4. It's a mystery to me.

I added it to my website so I can see if others sign up. Personally, I'm only curious and just like sharing what I think is useful.

When you sign up for the site there is a blank box for you to add a reference. If they put in your user name when they sign up, it adds to your stats. I don't think they get a discount for InstantCert or anything. I think it's just a number added to your profile.
