Degree planning for teen
#1
I am writing on behalf of my teen. I have used this site with great success and I return to glean info from the hive mind! I wish they could do UMPI since that's what I did but they are too young.
I have checked out the following:  Capella, PUG, SNHU

Your Location: Florida, USA
Your Age: 17
What kind of degree do you want?: Associate’s or Bachelor’s
Current Regional Accredited Credits: 1 from ASU UL (was trying for Pierpont BOG AAS but they did not do anything timely so here we are)
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 45 ACE credits from Sophia
Any certifications or military experience?: No
Budget: Open
Commitments: None
Dedicated time to study: Unlimited
Timeline: As fast as possible
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: NA, have FL Prepaid but will save that for further education most likely

Looking for the quickest, prefer CBE based on writing and presentations rather than proctored exams if at all possible. Very open to choice of school, honestly looking for the absolute quickest way to level up.

Thanks in advance and I am sure I am forgetting something!

Any preference for major?

A CBE option similar to UMPI to consider is East Texas A&M (ETAMU), formerly known as TAMU Commerce - they accept Sophia and other ACE credit:
https://www.tamuc.edu/competency-based-education/
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Te...y-Commerce

Here is a sample plan for their Organizational Leadership degree: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...egree_Plan

Not CBE, but my son goes to TESU and is doing multiple majors. He loves the ability to max out the usage of Sophia and Study.com. He did most of his RA credits through Finnish schools (unfortunately no longer available) and ASU UL. RA can be gained through TESU's TECEP exams or by bringing in cheaper outside credit, then you can (1) finish up with a 15-credit term at TESU or (2) pay the residency waiver fee.

Degree plans here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:TESU

Certs Completed: Scrum CSPO/CSM | Google PM/Data Analytics/Marketing

It seems like TESU, with its multiple majors and credit flexibility, might be a solid choice, especially if you want to maximize cost-effective credit options.

They *prefer* to be a PoliSci major but honestly whatever we can bang out the very quickest (like I mean weeks-months, not months-years) will work. They can use it to ladder up to what they decide they are interested in later.

BA History at TESU would be a good option that can be done quickly:
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...egree_Plan

A BA in Liberal Studies (BALS) with a concentration in humanities or social sciences is a very quick option, with the caveat that it is more of a check-the-box option: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...egree_Plan
Completed: HAU MBA | BA Economics (US) | Finland Open Studies @ XAMK/Metropolia/Helsinki/Laurea

Thanks, so it looks like they will have to take at least 29 credits at TESU since they have to have 30 RA credits per that page. Ughhhhh. I was trying to get them down to an absolute minimum. I wish they were old enough for UMPI, lol!

I really appreciate the info!

You don't have to take 29 credits at TESU. You can take RA credits externally and transfer them in. You could take as little as 6 credits at TESU (cornerstone and capstone) if you are willing to pay the residency waiver fee.

I would recommend taking a look at some of the easier classes for a 15-credit term at TESU, which is 12 weeks:
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison_State_University#TESU_Credit_Optimization

ART-100 A World of Art
Should be relatively easy, especially after taking Art History I & II at Sophia.org. No exam. Final paper only counts for 20% of grade. So long as you do well on the rest of the course, you could get a C or even a B while still doing poorly on the final project paper.
3

COM-339 The Story of Human Language
No exam. Final project is only worth 25% of grade. Short essays only need to be 250-300 words each. For an UL course, this one appears to be relatively straightforward.

GOG-230 World Geography
No exam. Final project consists of compare/contrast two different countries. Even if you do poorly on this final assessment (worth 30% of the grade), you could still scrape by with a C and a pass.

HIS-261 Introduction to Chinese History & Culture
For History majors. Meets non-Western civilization history requirement. One proctored midterm exam. No final exam. Final paper is only worth 20% of grade.

PHI-130 Introduction to Critical Reasoning
This is an easy and fun course in which there are no books to read, the discussion forums are worth 40% of your grade, the 200-500 word assignments are worth 40% of your grade, and the exams are only worth 20% of your grade. The exams you can get by with 2-5 hours of studying each. The entire course you can complete in just 20 hours.

I just wanted to add a cautionary note on getting the degree quickly for younger students unless the student has a very singular focus. I have an 18 year old son who accelerated using ASU. He is currently a junior in terms of credits but we have slowed way down because it is really important to get internships in this tough job market. If you complete the degree too quickly, then you are no longer eligible for internships since you must be a returning student upon completion of the internships. Internships are a great way for students to try out a few different types of jobs and discover what they like. Unfortunately, just having a degree without any experience is not competitive in today's market.

It appears TESU does not allow under 18 students unless they have a "Professional Learning Review" set of credits which we do not have so it looks like I am back to the drawing board, lol.

My son went through their age waiver process and needed 6 RA credits for admission. He did not have to complete a professional learning review. You can read through his experience here:
https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...8-year-old

Here are the details of the TESU requirements - if you don't qualify for the age waiver, you just have to do the TESU orientation (2 hours or so) before you can enroll, and your first semester with TESU is limited to 9 credits: https://www.tesu.edu/admissions/requirem...ations)%3B

They could take a couple of classes at ASU or choose another option - this page has a bunch of possible options: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sources_of_Credit

TESU also has a partnership with Genesis University, where several history classes can be taken and transferred in and are counted as RA:
https://genesisu.edu/

Either way, best of luck!
