Degree planning advice needed
#1
Hello ya'll,

I stumbled upon this forum a while ago and been a silent reader eversince.

I myself am looking for a Degree preferably in Electronics technology or a similar field.

I had an WES foreign creditial eval. of a german vacational programm done a couple years ago, as I was told at a local
community college in TX that this has to be done first. (plan didn't work out)

After a lenghty procedure with WES, I have received an report(course-by-course).

Quote:Status: Accredited Institution
Lenght of Program: Three and one-half years
Major: Electronic Engineering Technology
U.S. Equivalency: Associate Degree

Total undergraduate Semester Credits: 60
GPA 2.77

Attached you'll see a screenshot of the e-report of WES with the "courses" I was awarded credits for.

I really hope, that I can use this eval. to achieve a degree, without
having to start at 0 and since I live overseas and work full time, in
a way thats manageable. After completion, I planned on moving back to
central TX.

If the eval. would score me some credits, then i would like to know
how to work towards an TESU-degree in electronics system eng. tech.
or if it'll be easier to work towards any other degree or uni.

There isn't really a budget, but I would like to do this as cheap as possible.

Hope you guys can give me some info and point me in the right direction.
Thanks !

You might want to try a different evaluator at least once to see if they'll "upgrade" any of those credits to UL ones. Those credits aren't exactly useless, but they're not super useful either.

What do you consider "related" fields? Most similar degrees probably cannot be completed online. There are a few that can be completed online, like TESU's BS in Electrical Technology or BS in Electronics Systems Engineering Technology, but these are not inexpensive programs.

What is your absolute upper limit on costs? Everyone has one. Would $10k be too expensive? 20? 30? 100?

Thanks for your reply.

Hope you don't mind the question, but what could be done with the "WES L credits"?

I can look into other evaluators. Any recommendations?

I was thinking about the TESU's degrees you've mentioned.
But then again, if the eval. doesn't really help, then I would be interested in any kind of "easier" Bachelor degree, just in order to have a formal degree.

I was thinking(hoping) under <$10K, but would prefer online courses to transfer in and save as much as possible.

Right now, the WES evaluation is mostly good for electives. It might meet some degree requirements at TESU, but I'm not sure about that. You would have to apply to TESU to see where they put them. But if you did that, you couldn't send them a different evaluation if you got a better one from ECE or ACEI or anywhere else.

Unfortunately, for TESU, I'm counting 10+ classes that would need to be taken with them (assuming that your classes don't meet any of the requirements) and that otherwise probably cannot be transferred from elsewhere. Each class costs about $1500 each, though there would be a slight discount if you were able to do multiple flat-rate terms. So you're probably looking at 15-20k for a TESU degree. TESU is probably the easiest/cheapest U.S. degree in this field, though.

Both Excelsior and TESU offer the program you're looking at, and they're also ABET. It really depends, I don't think shopping for an evaluator will bump those to an upper level credit as the institution is not one that would grant upper level credits. You may want to do the TESU combo of associates/bachelors, review what degree options are on the WIKI for TESU and pick the closest one... I think you can do the PLA for the UL requirements.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The way I see it, the WES eval. isn't very helpful in order to get into an Electronic/Electrical engineering programme in terms of reducing the total cost to something acceptable.
I also don't think that a 2nd eval. would differ alot and it comes with a new lenghty eval. process.
I've tried to look into the PLA requirements, but without an TESU advisor its just to complicated..

I've taken a closer look at the, often on this board mentioned, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and as a EU citizen, I consider going for the Degree programme, allthough it's "information technology", I really like that you can pick the major in the bachelor programme "Smart IoT Systems: Embedded IoT Devices", which falls in my field of profession.

I have sent them an E-Mail with some questions, but I really think this will turn out positive.

How do you feel about Computer Science? There are well defined paths for that.
NanoDegree: Intro to Self-Driving Cars (2019)
Coursera: Stanford Machine Learning (2019)
TESU: BA in Comp Sci (2016)
TECEP:Env Ethics (2015); TESU PLA:Software Eng, Computer Arch, C++, Advanced C++, Data Struct (2015); TESU Courses:Capstone, Database Mngmnt Sys, Op Sys, Artificial Intel, Discrete Math, Intro to Portfolio Dev, Intro PLA (2014-16); DSST:Anthro, Pers Fin, Astronomy (2014); CLEP:Intro to Soc (2014); Saylor.org:Intro to Computers (2014); CC: 69 units (1980-88)

You don't need an advisor to do the PLA, you decide what classes you want to PLA and then go through the course, you'll be assigned a mentor to help you with the required PLA portfolio, then there will be some evaluation/grading done to make sure you've got all the requirements for each class you want to PLA to get the credit. Another option is, exactly what you mentioned, the Metropolia IT degree, you can transfer those credits to TESU for a BACS if you wanted later.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

@davewill
Thanks, it wasn't on my mind at first, but after considering the options, I'll keep that in mind for later. I'd rather go with metropolia at this time due to costs.

@bjcheung77
Thanks for confirming my thoughts of metropolia.
And also for the Info to transfer the credits for the BACS. That makes metropolia the better choice for me.

If my work/life Balance ever allows to, i will try to work on some more credits.

Hopefully one day, the Total credits of the b.eng. Information technology, the WES eval and whatnot enables me to get a degree in electronics, since I've been working in this Industriy ever since. Lol

Have a blessed holiday season everyone

Now that metropolia isn't an Option anymore, I'm back at the beginning.

Would there be anything else advisable?
I couldn't find any program thats similar to the metropolia IT degree, in regards of cost and value.

A cheap degree in (Electronics)/IT/AI, that can be done online at my own pace would be perfect.
Should be online: EU or USA

Any ideas?
