Degree Plan Question for English Majors at TESC
#1
Hello everyone,

I need some advice from English majors at TESC.

A friend of mine is wanting to pursue an English BA from Thomas Edison, and she is interested in earning as many credits as possible through credit-by-examination (i.e. CLEP, DSST, TECEP, etc.). So far, she has about 30 credits earned, mostly for general studies.

I'm looking for specific degree plan examples that might be feasible for her to use and modify. As I said, she wants to take as many CLEPs as possible, and then look for quick, cost-effective ways to earn the remainder of her credits, whether that means community college, TESC online courses, or other options. If there is another thread with degree plan examples, please direct me to that thread. A cursory forum search did not turn up any promising results.

For those of you who can help, I would be very appreciative!

That is one of the more difficult degrees to test out of effectively but I'll attach an evaluation using my credits (area of study only). The evaluation seems to be easier to understand than the degree website does so maybe it gives you some ideas. Obviously it isn't my area of study, but the notes they provide are a good start.

Applicable tests:
-Technical Writing DSST (or Technical Writing TECEP) - Fills lower level English elective
-Analyze & Interpret Literature CLEP - 6 Credits - Splits to fill 3 credit A&I Lit requirement and would fill three credits of LL English elective
-American Lit CLEP - 6 credits - Fills 6 LL credits of English elective area
-English Lit CLEP - 6 credits - Fills 6 LL credits of English elective area

As far as TESC goes, this degree is going to involve a lot of traditional courses taken at TESC or transferred in. The biggest issue is the UL requirement. It needs 15 credits of UL courses plus the 3 credit UL capstone. Those credits are going to hard to get since there are no UL CLEP, DSST, TECEP, ECE, or Straighterline exams/courses which fit this area of study (that I can see). Unless I'm missing something, this degree will only allow for 9 credits to be completed through test out (of the area of study), those being 6 LL English electives, and 3 credits in A&I Lit.

Since you can test out of the rest of the degree (Gen Eds & Electives), it requires 24 credits to be taken traditionally/online through TESC or another college. You can look at PLA courses too (http://www2.tesc.edu/plasearch.php) but those lose the appeal of tests which are so much faster and cheaper.

I'm going for my BA in English also. I'm going to post my plan for getting my degree below, depending on what your friend's credits transfer in as, she will want to modify things a bit. I'm also leaving in my notes explaining what I was thinking when I created it. Hope it helps. Smile
