One thing about security is that it is multidisciplinary and takes industry experience and education to enter. Most people start out in something more specific like pc support, then move to networking and then to security. I started out building and repairing computers at a store, then got my mcse cert and mcsd and went into software development. I have had security oriented roles forthepastten years unmixed capacities being exposed to it so it's now a differentiator for me.
It's also interesting. And with all the people in the world who hate us in the us,there are govt opportunities opening up in homeland security all over the place.

That's why I am waiting to attempt my Masters as experience helps a lot regardless of the field. Right now, I am leaning towards Network Security.
My experience has followed a somewhat normal path starting with PC Support, even though Networking's always been my dream, but I realize that IT security is needed. I will have to think about the Homeland Security angle.

Good for you. Definitely get as much experience as you can. Do not discount home-based experience either. Eat, live, breath computers. Spend less time playing games and facebooking, and more time building networks, troubleshooting routing issues, installing different operating systems, etc.
Play hard and work harder and you will achieve your goals.
