DSST Physical Geology and Human/Cultural Geography
#1
I am in need of very user friendly DSST Study Guides for Physical Geology and Human/Cultural Geography. I did locate these on Amazon, the author is Jack Rudman. Has anyone ever used these? Would they be good for someone who doesn't know very much about either subject. Also, does anyone have anyother ideas for study guide for these subjects.

Hi June -

Welcome to the IC-Forums!!

I have used these (Civil War & USSR) and found them useful in getting familiar with the style of question and answers that DANTES exams are infamous for; that is to say somewhat oddly written.

In any event, I am sure that in the end the book will indeed help - Good Luck!!

After having thought I'd finished with all of my tests, I was told by Excelsior they had made a mistake and that I had to come up with three science credits to meet my distribution requirement. So I'm studying for physical geology, and here are the study materials I've located: Cliffs Quick Reviews/Physical Geology (buy it and download it from the CliffsQuickReview website), and from my local library: Earth Science, Demystified by Linda Williams, and Earth's Dynamic Systems by Kenneth Hamblin (which is one of the recommended books by DSST). I bought and downloaded the SparkChart on geology and earth science from sparknotes.com, and have bought, but haven't yet used Jack Rudman's study guide for this exam. It's mainly test questions, and the part that provides information on physical geology doesn't look very good. However, I haven't taken the test yet, so I don't really know that. The Cliffs Quick Review is packed with information, and I'm betting it could be used without any other study guides.....but why do that when books are available at the library for free?

This is by no means an easy test. Refer to the SEARCH column on this site, punch in geology and you'll find some excellent postings. I used the audio-visual program that was listed as a resource and found it to be of significant help. the Rudman books were useful as well. It is , as you probably know, a 60 question test base with a great deal of attention given to :

1. plate techtonics
2. continental drift
3. the process of subduction
4. rock classifications and their mineral makeup
5. ecology, erosion, pollution, irrigation, desertification, and tropical forests
and all the other climate zones

I passed after three weeks of study and no real science background or interest level in the subject. I did however find it interesting and if you have a science background you will undoubtedly find it easier than I did. The very best of luck to you and pass the test ... Iam sure you will !!

Well, I took the DSST Physical Geology test today and just barely passed with a 48....46 is the lowest passing score. A score this low would normally make me complain (to myself), but not in this case! I knew almost nothing about geology when I started studying, and there is a huge amount of information to absorb. The resources I ended up using were the Cliff's Notes/Physical Geology, the video series called Earth Revealed at learner.org, and Essentials of Geology by Lutgens & Tarbuck. The computerized test I took had 114 questions. The questions seemed somewhat skewed toward minerals/rocks, and their composition, but was otherwise balanced in the body of knowledge listed on the fact sheet. I strongly recommend that if you can take any other science course that InstantCert offers flashcards for, that you go that route. I could have taken biology, but I thought that because it was six credits, and Physical Geology was three credits, that I'd be doing less work if I took Geology. It wasn't true.

I was supposed to tKE THIS TEST NEXT WEEK BUT DROVE UP TO The base to take it today and was pleasantly surprised. This was one of the easiest tests ive ever taken. Couple questions on topography and the charts are right there. All the answers are in this test people!! I didnt study at all and passed with flying colors. It also asks you questions like-which country is a subtropical climate?brazil-united states-britain-egypt. anyway of course its brazil. Peace everyone im out
