DSST Drug/Alcohol Abuse
#1
Does anyone have any advice?
I'm studying for this for Tuesday. Looks like a focus on pharmacology and alcohol. But I'm wondering if I'll have to know each and every effect/withdrawl symptom of each drug... I can barely pronounce half of them!

Any feedback is muy appreciated!!!

btw - It's fiesta time here in San Antonio, so ironically, i'm studying alcohol instead of partaking of any - bummer!

Best of luck,

Hi libartsmgr,

You do need to be familiar with the symptoms, effects, and withdrawal effects of the MAIN drugs of abuse. Don't go overboard, but at least be able to recognize which drug they are asking about when they mention certain withdrawal symptoms, or certain effects.

This chart will help you....

http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/abuse/chart.htm

These are very useful web sites with info on all the various drugs of abuse...

Best of luck to you,

Thanks Snazz! I'll work through the sites you suggest. Appreciate the feedback.

Anar - Fiesta is basically when the whole city gets together to party. Lot's of parades and events. In fact, at the college where I usually take my exams, an event is going on right now, called Oyster Bake. There's NIOSA - night in old San Antonio, the Flambeau Parade, the River Parade, El Rey Feo (the ugly king) is crowned (believe it or not, it's an honor to be El Rey Feo), and the biggest event of the whole thing - Battle of Flowers Parade. The whole city pretty much shuts down and comes out to see the parade. It's a total blast, nothing like it anywhere!

Upgray,
Thank you for the insight, it definitely helps! Appreciate it!

Snazz, there really is nothing like the San Antonio experience of Fiesta. It honors the heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto. Smile

Snazz or Upgray - (or anyone that has taken it) did the exam reference the generic name or the brand name of the drugs? Or both?

Any feedback is really appreciated!!

libartsmgr,

I think they mostly used brand names for the prescription drugs. But you need to know the chemical names of the illicit drugs, in addition to their street names!

If you feel like you are in medical school, or that you have been possessed by a pharmacist from hell....you are studying the right stuff!

Best of luck,

As upgray already mentioned, make sure you know which amendment repealed prohibition, and know which drug category Haldol is in.

Those two were both on my exam too, and I had to make an educated guess.

Just wanted to reiterate upgray's heads-up, in case you missed it in his message.

There were quite a few questions asking about the withdrawal symptoms, long-term effect on the body, side effect, and signs of abuse, associated with the main illicit drugs (ie, cannabis, PCP, LSD, Heroin, Cocaine).

- Definitely know which drugs fall into which category.
- Know the schedules (which drugs are Schedule I....etc.).
- Also, know what the rules are for each Schedule (ie, Drugs are Schedule I if there is no accepted medical use for them).
- Know what the legal BAL (blood alcohol level) is. (0.8)
- Know what the LD50 (lethal dose to 50% of population) of alcohol is.
- Know what the highest naturally occurring alcohol concentration is in fermented beer (15%).
- Know how to work out alcohol content from the proof/vol. (Eg, 100 proof = 50% alcohol content).
- Know what Harrison Act, CSA, DEA, and Drug Analog Act are.

There were no questions requiring dates on my exam.

Hope that helps,
