Credit for ALEKS Corp (McGraw Hill) Online courses in College Algebra & Statistics

I am going to call tomorrow and demand to talk to Dr. Keel. If he is not there (We are having the Snowcopolypse III) I will e-mail him. I want a final definative answer to this and I want ALL advisors to be on the same page with this.

The two advisors I spoke to said that it IS Math 102 and it needs to be updated in the database. That's why all the advisors are saying it's developmental. They can only say what the database is showing them when it's input. I was told that discussions were had all the way up to the director of advising and again it IS Math 102.

They also told me to tell ANYONE that is having issues to open a help ticket and it will get resolved.

I spoke with Mia Abuwi, just now. She said there has been a problem because of the name of this course, but it has been reviewed by her and the Associate Resistrar and they reviewed the ACE recommendation and[SIZE="6"] it DEFFINETLY IS MAT-102[/SIZE] and [SIZE="5"]NOT a developmental math[/SIZE] So anyone who has a problem should direct the uninformed to talk to her. Dr. Keel posted an answer to my appeal for all advisors to be on the same page. BUT he avoided giving me what I need in writing. So I called and asked for it, but Nia has already left for the day. So I have a phone appointment with Dr. Keel Monday morning. I will ask him to PUT IT IN WRITING so I don't have to worry about the next person changing it again.

Here is his reply:

Good Afternoon Linda and et.al: First things first, your comments, good, bad, indifferent never fall on deaf ears, so please always feel free to share. This board is a wonderful opportunity for students to share with each other but always feel free to contact me directly through my secretary at 609-984-1141 ext. 3310 or 3305 if you have a very specific question. I try to, but do not always get a chance to check this board as often as I would like, so never leave a specific issue out there hoping that I will see it, just reach me directly.

Having said all of that, let me offer the following. NO EXCUSE. That's right, I can say unequivocally that there is NO EXCUSE for you to get conflicting answers to a very specific and legitimate question. All advisors are trained to answer general questions pertaining to most degrees. A question like, does a particular exam count or what is its TESC equivalence is exactly the kind of general questions that are easily answered by any one on the advising staff. Will mistakes happen. Absolutely, but we try to and we know that from the thousands of successful students, mistakes are held to an absolute minimum. In your particular case, I am not sure where the mixup occurred with this particular ALEKS exam, but I can assure you and all of your classmates that you should be very comfortable in getting answers from an advisor on these types of general questions. However, if you have a specific question about a specific course/exam and how it fits into your specific degree program, then I always recommend that you speak with an advisor who is assigned to that particular program. This is best accomplished through an appointment with an advisor in the specific program.

This is really an area that TESC could improve on if they were at all concerned about their customer service levels. A similar discussion/concern is going on about whether or not TESC is accepting 1 of Penn Foster's Bus Comm classes to meet their Mngrl Comm requirement for the BSBA degree plan. Some people on this forum have used it successfully (and already have completed their degrees) and now we are hearing conflicting answers from TESC advisors.

Why is it so hard to be consistent about things like this? I guess we'll never know. But, I do sincerely appreciate your "fighting" this one, Linda. Thanks.

Getting it in writing is not 100% full proof when it comes to TESC as when I found out when I received a response to my ticket. As you can see from the list you should be able to take 2 Stats classes without it duplicating but that's not the case. I've argued this point with 2 of the advisors and Dr. Keel but they wouldn't budge even though they were well aware that I had this in writing. All they could say was they made a mistake. From my experiences and conversations with Advisement thus far it seems like the most important part is getting it on your EVALUATION. FYI I deleted personal information and the advisor's name.


As we dicussed you planned to take ALEKS0003 College Algebra (our MAT-121). If you did not take that course you could do either 0004 or 0005 as I indicated. I'm sorry for the confusion, I did not understand your intention to take all the ALEKS courses through Trig., I thought it was either or.

Ok.. I'm confused as far as what you're saying?

If you're talking about the fact that they have different course numbers, and that fact alone should give you credit for both Business Stats and Intro or SBS, that's not always the case, even at different colleges. Many different colleges that I've seen will say similiar courses duplicate even through they're in different subtypes. (History & PoliSci, English & History, so on & so forth.) They're usually a lot more clear about it and point this fact outright in the catalog (Which can be a huge cluster when transfering in credits to the big 3 from various sources, because from what I've seen, if it has a shadow of similarity, they'll yell duplicate!, no matter how many people before you got full credit.) Did they actually tell you in writing that those credits would not duplicate initially?
