Credit for ALEKS Corp (McGraw Hill) Online courses in College Algebra & Statistics

Oh, I think I am going to have to defrag my brain. I just finished my last assessment with 70%. This has been a very hard program, but I am now done. I have submitted the course for ACE credit awaiting approval from ALEKS. I hope and pray that my school will allow it. They should, they accept ACE credit, so I see no reason why they would not. I feel for anyone struggling through this or any other ALEKS course. Don't get me wrong, the ALEKS program is top notch, but it is very tough. You had better make sure your answers are correct and that you do not forget anything along the way. Ok, now I am rambling, must get sleep.

Wow, I think I was a little out of it last night when I wrote that last post. For those that follow the ALEKS thread with interest, here is a little about my situation in case it might help someone to make a decision one way or the other.

I am 34 years old and work in the fire service. I originally went to college over 15 years years ago. I spent a few semesters trying to figure out what I wanted to do and goofed off. I decided to quit and join the fire department. Since then, I have learned the error of my ways as so many do. I have completed my AAS degree in Fire Science, but not wanting to be trapped in on field, I decided to persue a BSBA degree at a local B&M private college. I have a few Gen Ed courses I need, so I am going to try everything I can to test out or replace them. This is where ALEKS came in to play. Although I took college Algebra my first go around, I made a "D" in it. I did mention I was goofing off, didn't I? Well, I did not want to half to repeat the course, so I was going to try and test out of it. Then came ALEKS. I used to be very good in math. My senior year in highschool, I took Algebra II and Geometry back to back during two hours each day. I made straight A's in both. Knowing this, I thought maybe testing out would be an option for me. I found out quickly however, that the old saying, "use it or loose it" certainly applies. So, I decided on ALEKS. I figured since it was ACE accredited, I may end up getting it accepted at my school, but if not, it was still a great resource to help prepare me to attempt to test out of college Algebra.

As far as my journey with ALEKS:

Time Frame: A little over a month ( Mainly working on the weekends)

Total Hours: 58.7

Total # of Assessments: 7

First Assessment: 22%

Last Assessment: 70%

Average Gain per Assessment: 8%

Number of notebooks full of computations: 2.1 (single subject)

Amount of notes: 1 2" Binder full

Time taken for ALEKS to approve for ACE credit: Less than 8 hours.

Total investment: $40.00 (Only because I did not meet the 70% before my first month was up. I think however I will venture into a couple more classes and maybe use it to demonstrate its usefulness to others)

Bored me? Not a chance. I read your post with great interest. Thanks for sharing all of that awesome info. It really helps me sometimes to gauge how easy or difficult a test or course is by the "life" experiences of others on the board who have been through it.

And, congrats on that 70% - that's gotta feel good. So, get some coffee (or your caffeine of choice) and hit the day!!

I am interesting in hearing who they are if you don't mind. I really think (and hope) that most schools that accept ACE credit recommendations will accept the ALEKS courses. I really do not see why other than monetary gain, a school that accepts ACE credit, CLEP and DSST would not accept it. It would be interesting to hear a school's arguement for not accepting ACE credit for GenEd courses but allowing someone to use CLEP and DSST for them, since ACE credit is ultimately what they are using for those also.

I have the utmost respect for anyone fighting their way through precalculus and intro to stats (well done momof2) or any of the ALEKS maths courses.

I was lucky to have the background to knock out the pure maths courses at leisure but the last three weeks with intro to stats has been a lot less than fun. Last three assessments were 66%, 67%, 67% with those last two 67%s done back to back until 4am with work at 8 (optimistic, mmm?).

Knuckled down for some proper study (goodbye lunches and Sundays) and now at nearly 2am (work again at 8) have finally got a 73% Will take that, thank you very much.

Unlikely to have stuck it without this forum to provide the great motivation. Keep at it guys

maybe you should ask the school if they accept ACE credit.

If yes, then tell them you have acquired some ACE credit in the name of ALEKS.

That way you kind of have them cornered.

The schools are all schools in Nebraska, a state i find to be very liberal with transfer credits, and very good cusotmer service among all distance schools.

The schools are northeast community college, chadron state college, and peru state college.

Most of them are not yet sure about beginning, but intermediate, college algebra, pre calculus, trig, and stats seems to be a go!

I have been emailing these schools and asking them if they accept ALEKS math courses for credit satisfying the math requirements. (usually intermediate or college algebra, and stats)

When emailing, I mention that the courses are ACE evaluated, and provide them with the link to the ACE site for ALEKS courses.

As the schools are listed as cooperating institutions of Aleks, and are liberal and open to transfer credit, They seem willing to take the credit. They want to see a transcript of course, but it seems 99% they will be accepted. As soon as I am done the courses I am working on, I will send my ACE transcripts over to Northeast Community College and get them evaluated.

I plan to send beginning, intermediate, college, and business stats. I was going to do Trig and send it over, but I can't stomach much more math after all I've been doing lately
