Coursera: Google & IBM. I am looking for Beginners guide
#1
Hey all,
I am looking for help in possibly gaining some knowledge in the tech cert related industry.  I know there are a ton of specializations and career paths in computers.  Cyber security, coding, project management, data science, etc...

I am at a beginner level when it comes to computer tech courses.  Through NYS I was able to get a membership to all the courses at Coursera.

My question is, has anyone ever laid out a guide as to what courses to take in what order?  I am looking for a clearer path using the coursera certs from Google and IBM.  I just registered for the Google Project Management Cert.

I recently graduated from Empire State in Public Affairs and just started my Masters in Special Education at Brooklyn College thanks to this site.  I only trolled this site for 15 years before actually taking the advice of everyone here lol

Thanks all,
Mike

Are you sure that the IBM certs are included with your access? They're not included with Coursera Plus, so I think they're usually excluded from organizational access, too. The list of Coursera Plus courses can be seen here: https://www.coursera.support/s/article/3...rsera-Plus

What is your ultimate goal? Are you wanting to get a job teaching tech to students who need special education? Is this for your own self-interests?

The certificates on Coursera all have a page that says which order the courses should be completed in. I've done a Coursera certificate and have looked at others. They all have that page.

I'm pretty sure that mdel210201 is asking whether to take the PM certificate before the IT Professional certificate, for instance.

Yes, I am able to enroll in IBM courses as well. I thought the same thing you did.

I am a career changer at the moment.  I recently left law enforcement to purse teaching because an opportunity presented itself to me where I can start teaching full time for NYC right away and have most of my masters paid for.  Lifestyle and scheduling was the main reason I went to teaching from law enforcement.  The certs would be more self interest based.  I would like to take courses and have options in case teaching is not 100% for me.

In that case, I think the IBM certs are largely the same as (but perhaps slightly more advanced than) the Google ones. The Google ones are intended to be taken by "everyone" while the IBM ones seem less so.

I would take the Google IT Support Professional certificate before: IBM Cybersecurity or Full Stack Cloud Developer. I don't think there will be much overlap, but the subjects should build on one another.

Take the Google Data Analyst certificate before taking any of the IBM Data Analyst/Science/Engineering certificates. There will probably be significant overlap with these. The IBM ones say you don't need prior programming experience, but you might want to go through at least some of https://www.py4e.com/ to familiarize yourself anyway. Programming can be tricky, especially without a tech background.

The others are probably just take whenever.

Thank you so much for all that!  It is a big help.
