Considering Dropping - 2 classes in.
#1
Programming for Managers is the 2nd class I've been assigned, and the final project is wholly unrelated to any instruction in the course.

It might have been relevant had we spent a semester programming aspects of visual basic, using Visual Studio, but we did not.  We learned an overview - and did zero hands on- of multiple languages- survey style. The requirements of the final project are not covered in this course.  This course is a requirement for the MIS concentration if you do not bring in the Google cert. I transferred in 117 hours.  Not the google certificate.

Secondly, I'm underwhelmed with the MIS class.  It's probably me, but this question just sent me...
"According to the Learning Activity titled “Computer Hardware,” what is the largest size of Byte listed? "

I've never heard of any multiple of bytes (kilobyte, megabyte, etc.) being referred to as "size of byte".  In my mind, "size of byte" is always 8 bits. This type of wording is really throwing me off, and it's ubiquitous.  Also, content of the class is decidedly dated.

The first class was Intermediate Computing, and it was pretty straightforward.  The only downside was that the length of the class exceeded what it should have, as the instructor took > 72 hours to grade.  When you're subscribing to a college in 7-week chunks, time is money.

At this point I'm not sure whether I'll consider this a $1400.00 life lesson Angry , or find the willpower to teach myself Visual Studio, Visual Basic, and build a program in them (with supporting database) I expect I'll have the "Programming for Managers" course sitting incomplete in my competencies while I cycle through others- one by one- now.

I apologize for the venty-nature of my post, but these are things that I am experiencing, and others like I've done, may get value from seeing the full range of experiences being had.

Programming for Managers needs to be revamped. No question.

You have some options...

1. Reach out to the professor and ask for help. You don't have to teach yourself.
2. Drop the class and do the Google cert.
3. Use YouTube videos and teach yourself.
4. Drop the class and do a different concentration.

2. Drop the class and do the Google cert. <- I don't intend to concurrently pay UMPI tuition while diving into this certification, so now it's looking like I'll be taking a 7-week Google-cert break in the middle of obtaining this degree, which throws back my plans to begin my Masters degree by two months. At least the start dates at WGU are flexible.

I'll see if Jessica will let me drop the course without penalty. I doubt that'll happen, but we'll see.

What about changing minor?

MIS was not a good class, it was poorly written and needs a revamp. I've heard the same about programming for managers. I took the Google cert.

What about doing project management?
Completed
2023 UMPI Bachelor of Applied Science, Minors: Management Info Systems & Political Science, summa cum laude
2022 Pierpont BOG AAS, Area of Emphasis: Information Systems

A lot of people are able to knock out the Google cert in a week or two. Some in a weekend. I did it during the lag time while I waited for milestones in other courses to be graded.

That said, you can also set up a Zoom with the professor and get help learning the material you need to learn.

Oh, no!  I am enrolled in UMPI’s BABA with Project Management and Info Sys concentration.
Are you talking about the BUS 245 Programming for Managers class?
This class is part of the required courses for my degree.
I had seen some concerning comments about this class here on the forum.  Now, I'm definitely not looking forward to this class.
Has anyone paused their enrollment at UMPI to get the Google Analytics certificate just to avoid this class?  I don't want to pause my enrollment at UMPI.
I looked up transfer equivalencies for this class, and see a lot of Visual Basic classes are being accepted for credit toward this class.  My local community college is offering an 8-week CIS159: Visual Basic Programming class in a couple of weeks.  I think I'll look into taking this.

Take this time to quickly regroup and decide what your path is, I suggest to continue onward with the course and quickly get it done if at all possible. There are courses at several universities I've taken that are outdated, including the ones at ENEB. There are providers out there such as Saylor.org that may be inexpensive, but their course material links may not work well. You just need to go at your pace and get it done, there are bounds of issues, you need to get past that and continue forward towards that goal.

I would recommend the Google certificate that we know works and roughly what its difficulty is vs. an unknown Visual Basic course that might wind up being even worse than the UMPI class.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I did the BABA PM-MIS in Summer 1.

BUS 245 isn't a great class, but it was do-able. I found the professor to be approachable and very willing to help.

Rachel:  Good point.  If you, or anyone here has a Coursera discount code (for the single certification, not the Plus plan), please share with me.  I will be working on my UMPI classes and the Google Analytics Cert, so there is no way I will get the cert done in the 7-day trial.  Thank you so much. Big Grin
