Concurrent Degrees
#1
I recently received my BOG AAS [area: Information Systems] from Pierpont. I'm planning to take 7 to 11 more Sophia/Coursera/SDC and then enroll in UMPI YourPace using the Pell Grant.

I’m curious if I can receive both the BAS MIS and the BA in Psychology from UMPI, and if/how I can maximize the utilization of the Pell Grant.
Can I earn both the BAS MIS and the BA in Psychology, and will UMPI allow their concurrent graduation?
I wonder about concurrently, because the Pell is done after the first earned degree.

(In total for both degrees it seems I would need to take about 19 classes from UMPI. My degree(s) plan attempts to accounts for the option of taking the MAOL route. I understand there's a practicum component to the Psy degree, but I think it would probably still be worth it if I can do something like volunteering locally.)

Thanks for your help!

No concurrent graduation, it's going to be one after the other, the BAS then the BA, 30 different credits at minimum. During your BAS, take the 3-4 classes that transfer into the MAOL in addition to the MIS minor. You should fill in the addendum and template to give us an overall picture of your situation. You need to get in contact with UMPI and see if they can 'hold' audit of graduation for the BAS until you finish the requirements of the BA, then graduate one after the other. Wouldn’t it make more sense to do this as a single degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Management Information Systems? The “Applied Science” and “Liberal Studies” programs are useful for people who want to piece together a degree plan without the depth of study usually required by a major, but if you’re going to do a major anyways, do you really gain much by adding the major-less “Applied Science” label that would probably require some followup clarification in a job interview?

@jackstrike, You're missing the addendum... Anyways, you can do the BAS first and then the BA Psych, again ask to not graduate until you complete the BA Psych to reap the benefits of financial aid for both degrees. You need to email admissions/advising both to make sure that is possible, it may even go up to the registrar for that request. I think they'll allow it, as you're allowed to do double majors, dual degrees, etc, they just don't show (in the details on the link I posted earlier) on how to do both at the same time...

The BAS canNOT be complete with a second major. So you can't work on the BAS along with the BA in Psych (or any other degree) at the same time. You MUST graduate with your BAS, wait for your degree to confer, then apply for the second degree, AND complete an ADDITIONAL 30 credits at UMPI. It's the same as the BLS. For the second bachelor's degree, there is no Pell Grant and only student loans.

Actually, that's a good idea, doing a BA Psych and a BABA PM & IS double degree or dual major with concentration, that should allow the prospective student to graduate at the same time... The BAS/BLS doesn't allow it, so this would be optimum...

Yes, that I am aware of. I'm just thinking the prospective student can take all the classes required for both degrees, graduate one then the other. In other words, have both degree plans in the system and graduating one after the other... OP can take all the YourPace credits they want before graduating the first degree and get all of that paid off with grants instead of taking out loans.

Budget: I don’t have much of a budget for education expenses, I will be looking to the Pell Grant for UMPI and continue taking Sophia/Coursera as efficiently as possible.
Commitments: I will be working full-time.
Dedicated time to study: Maybe have 10-20 hours per week for study.
Timeline: Unless I determine a more attractive direction, finishing the BAS, BA and MAOL from UMPI within 2 years would be the ideal.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: It’s possible my workplace might have assistance/reimbursement, I will be looking into it, but will not be building a plan that hinges on it.

Thank you, and thanks to CenterSquarEd and ss20ts, for the ideas and discussion. Once enrolled, I'll inquire with admissions and advising to ensure it's possible and ask to hold graduation on the BAS until completing the BA Psych.

I believe I would prefer a BAS over a BABA.

I surmise each degree would need to hit a 30-credit minimum. After Sophia and SDC credits that fulfill subject requirements in the major, the Psychology major would still need 9 classes, so 30 credits would seem about right, anyway.

Thanks again!

Unfortunately, UMPI Academic policy prevents exactly what you are thinking of doing. UMPI Academic Policy does not allow a "dual degree" situation like other universities, you have to have the first degree conferred in order to declare and begin a second degree. And as ss20ts stated previously, you cannot "double major" in BLS/BAS and anything else. You could major in the BAS MIS and then complete all of the BA Psych courses before graduating with the BAS without actually "declaring" the BA Psych major, but then you'd have to do an additional 30 semester hours of coursework for the second Bachelors degree regardless with only Federal Loans available. In all honestly, in order to maximize Federal Grants and such, your best bet is to double major BABA PM & IS and BA Psych if you are dead set on those two majors. Otherwise, just do the BA Psych with a minor in MIS and call it a day.

No, you cannot do this! For the second bachelor's degree, you MUST complete an additional 30 credits at UMPI AFTER your first degree is conferred. You canNOT work on any other degree while completing the BAS.
