The 800-series exams are expected to be released shortly -- Aug. or Sept seems to be the current buzz. Everybody's speculating. New study materials for the 800s are in the process of release by many vendors. Some are "pre-order" and some are already available. The 700 series exams will overlap for a while - the forum-gurus anticipate they will be around till about Aug. of 2013. We'll know when CompTia tells us.

I think you could go for the 800s. Study materials are around - many more are being released around end of July and August. The 800-series exams are expected (by many) to be available within 60 days. Or - you still probably have time to qualify under the 700s. But newer is always good, in IT. (Isn't it?)

Here's one instruction vendor's take:

"As an ISO/ANSI accredited exam, A+ is on a 3-year exam update cycle. CompTIA A+ 220-701 and 220-702 launched in August 2009, We have just release the new A+ 2012 course the 220-801 and 802 comptia A+ which is now available to buyTODAY"

You can probably prep for the new 800's NOW, by starting with current 700 series materials. When I did the 701/702, they had some questions on the exam reaching back to the Win 95 and NT era if I recall. The 801/802 will also likely be full of questions about current "old" stuff (XP era?)

I read somewhere that all the NT stuff etc. was to be replaced by Windows 7 questions at some point in the 701/702 cycle. Did they leave this to the 800-cycle? Looks like they might still be one Windows version behind in any case. I believe Windows 8 retail release is scheduled for Oct 26 and I'm guessing the 801/802 exams will be in place before then.

I suggest you choose 220-801 and 220-802 exams for the A+ certifications. The previous version of the CompTIA A+ certification, exam codes 220-701 and 220-702, will be available through Aug. 31, 2013. You can take either exam series to become CompTIA A+ certified.
