Clep Mathematics using ALEK vs SL vs anyone other option
#1
I would like to take a Clep exam for college mathematics (it's the only one the local community college will except besides pre calc and calc) in August. First question. How long does it take for clep exams to be processed because I need to take computer classes in the fall but they keep telling me I need to take a remedial course. If I pass clep I can bypass this.

Any recommendations on how I should go about this. I have seen in other threads people complaining about Saylor and I am wondering what the pros and cons vs different avenues would be. I would probably start at a pre algebra level as of now. (Alek i can use to transfer if i wanted to test out right)

I really need to start from the bottom. Do you guys think this is an unrealistic goal? I do pretty well on my other subjects. I just have not taken a math course in 8 years.

Oh and I want to take the information system and computer applications clep as well. I feel like I might be able to just bang that out using quizlet and memorizing the terms. I passed my ace personal training test this past month doing that and it worked wonders.

Thanks for any advice you may have. Happy belated Easter!

This is a very realistic goal if you're willing to work at it!

I don't have any experience with ALEKS but, I'd caution against SL for this. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE SL and have taken a number of courses there, but I don't think they're the best resource for this.

Personally, I'd start with the official CLEP study guide and use Khan Academy for those topics. It's free and I think it's great! Some of the stuff you'll need to know wont be on Khan Academy, though. For that, I used IC and it was a big help. I also used an REA AP CLEP prep book I bought. It helped, but I don't think I'd do it again. It cost more than a month of IC and helped a lot less.

If you're willing to work through the Khan Academy lessons and supplement with other sources as needed, I think you'll be able to pull this off.

About the Info Sys CLEP, I got a 78 using only IC (however, I've been in a business/tech field for years). If you have a tech background of any kind, it's pretty straight forward.

I have some experience with this. I am normally pretty big on straighterline, however when it comes to math I would do ALEKS. I have take the college math clep and passed it, however I am pretty good at math to begin with.
ALEKS is basically as cheap as it gets. I passed College algebra ALEKS with 20 hours logged in time. How it works is you take a pre-test that is 30 questions, if you do really well on it you are finished with the whole class, however the average is probably ~35%. After the pretest you are given a "pie" which is a chart showing which areas you need to work on, faster you work, the faster you will be finished. after about every 4 hours of working you are forced to take like a 20 question quiz

As far as processing, when you take the CLEP you put in your college's code. it should be sent within a week or so. as far as ACE credit (SL and ALEKS) it usualy takes liek a day or 2 for them to put it on ACE transcript and TESC received my ACE transcript like less than a week after i submitted it to them
Also I have taken the information system and computer applications Lots of overlapping study material for Intro to computers DSST and Information Systems DSST, was a pretty easy CLEP
CCAF Air & Space Operations Technology- COMPLETE
TESC AS - General Managment-COMPLETE
TESC BSBA Computer Information Systems-COMPLETE
WGU MBA IT -COMPLETE
