cookderosa Wrote:Two quick experiences. First, off this board, the few people I have spoken to who had already taken a CLEP exam didn't study either. I don't really think that the CLEP marketing material encourages "study" because they spin it as "credit for knowledge you already have" type of thing. One gal I work with actually thought studying seemed to be "cheating" in some way. I think some people think of them as SAT-like or like a placement test. Of course, they are mistaken!
Second, a conversation I had with an admissions rep from Kaplan College told me that they accept CLEP exams for pre-req requirements into their business program but that he doesn't recommend it since "no one ever passes those things." He does have a bias, in that the college benefits if a student pays the tuition for pre reqs rather than CLEPping, but I was still shocked by his position.
So......we have to consider the possibility that the people on this board are, in fact, running higher pass rates than average.
I would agree that Instantcert users have a higher pass rate than the general public...but I also believe that the general public has a higher pass rate than the general military pass rates seen on the chart referenced in this thread. Even the average joe schmo off the street is not likely to walk into a test paying $85-$90 without any preparation and no idea of whether they have a chance of passing it. On the other hand, if I was in the military and had the ability to take these for free, I would not study for anything. I would go in and take them all and see which ones I could skate by on and then the ones that I failed, go back and study for those to take 6 months later - again for free...

I think this thread indirectly solidifies just how important IC is. I know I couldn't pass all these tests without it.

Well I agree that IC > General public > Military. This can be interpretated several ways. The most obvious, though not necisarly true is. IC smarter than average joe smoe who is smarter than the average military.
Now, again, this is not true. There are dumb IC'ers. There are dumb public and dumb military. And the exact opposite. Just when I wrote it out in formula, I thought it was funny that is the way it looked. I do not mean to offend anyone. However this goes to show the danger of statistics.
Though I do think those low numbers are in the college boards and colleges best interest. If to high a percentage of people pass test then it does not look like their tough enough and they loose their reputation. If no one ever passes them then no one will take them and they wont make money.
Colleges love for you to not know about these. An example is my college does not honor Cleps. That is ok. I am just working on subjects that apply towards another degree at another college. Two degrees is always better than one. Especialy if done at the same time. LOL.
Anyway, our college will let you test out of any 1000 or 2000 level class. For 3000 and 4000 level classes you must first document experience in the subject matter to be allowed to test out.
They make you jump through a lot of hoops to do this. To give an example of how many. In the last 4 years talking to me dean she told me only 9 people requested to test out of keyboarding I. The school operates on quarters. So that is 16 terms. Out of those nine, eight of them where guys who tried. The only girl succeded. Out of the eight guys only 3 ever actualy took the test. The others either did not show up, never finished filling out the paper work, changed their mind and took the class for an easy A to bring up their gpa etc.
Anyway what was my point. Oh yeah, low pass rates on test outs is good for the industry.
