Maybe he can ask his friends and see who he knows that actually has a class ring. And better still, who actually wears a ring that was purchased.
Just a thought...
We bought them for both our sons that graduated high school and they sit in their boxes. I'm 99% sure neither boy ever wore it out.
EDIT- I forgot to say that we got both ours at The Ring Company. That company was suggested here after the moderator Rebel100 bought his daughter's class ring there. It was very very easy and you can customize it. I didn't find it too expensive, considering, but there are tiers of things you can opt in/out of that determine the cost. https://www.ringcompany.com/Default.aspx

You're right, ALL of those are better than a class ring!
I will say that both of my kids want Letterman's jackets though, and we will buy them even though they are WAY overpriced. My daughter has worked really hard for that letter and all those pins, and my son will as well. ONLY RULE: NO ONE wears their jacket except them. I will not have some girl con my kid into letter her "borrow" his jacket. All that crap isn't replaceable, and I'm not buying some chick I don't even know a $300 jacket! You only get to wear that jacket if you came out of my womb!

Actually they've got some really cool ones. The black spinner style and the dog tags look great.

A lot of schools prohibit anyone from wearing a letterman jacket to school or school activities unless they are the person that earned the letter.
