Choosing a School - need your help
#1
I am trying to choose a school and I could use your help. I have time to make the descision since I've just started, but I will feel much better once I do, so please through in your two cents.

My plan is to test out of as much as possible, but I want to take a couple of actual courses (online). I have a lot of free time now, so I want to move though this very quickly. I plan on taking 2-3 tests (CLEP/DSST)per month.

Does TESC really require hand written midterms? The thought of that scares me because my spelling isn't great (to say the least).

I live in CT so COSC would be the least costly and I can drive there in an hour if I need to take tests on-site. I am taking some CLEPs there.

I only have 6 credits so TESC taking FEMA is very tempting, but I am willing to pay if I can get the credits to COSC somehow.

I can't find much info on ECs online courses and how they handle testing. Has anyone had experience with that?

Cost is of some importance, but the time it takes to complete this is more so.

Thanks for any and all help,

Brian

As a Charter Oak grad (as of next weekend!), naturally, I'm a bit biased. As you've seen, Charter Oak offers several DSST, CLEP, and TESC testing dates per month. Also, their tuition for in-state residents is great. The other public colleges (Southern, Eastern, UCONN, etc.) charge about twice as much per individual class. In my experience, the quality of Charter Oak's online classes is excellent. I believe there are a small number of classes (maybe two or three) that still require a written midterm and/or final, but that has largely been phased out.

I had a fantastic experience at Charter Oak and I recommend it highly. However, from what I have read here and in other forums, Excelsior and TESC offer great programs, too. I just don't have any personal experience with them.

Good luck with your decision! No matter which school you choose, you'll be glad you finished your degree.

I took one course through TESC and for that course I did have a handwritten, closed book midterm. The final was online and open book.

I took four courses through EC and their midterm and final were online and open book. About 30% of each class' grade was based on a project.

As you can see by my sig I'm a TESC grad. I chose this route due to it being the only one of the Big 3 that offered the status of being a public school with actual majors. The fees were a little high but it was still cheaper than it would've been going with another state school. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks!

Right now it's between COSC & EC. If I factor in FEMA the cost for all of the big 3 is about the same. If I knew which one awarded the most generous portfolio credit that might decide it for me.

That's cool. I found the Excelsior courses to be fairly easy. Any ideas on a major? The courses I took through them were IT and business related...

No major yet - it's not too important for what I need the degree for so I'll see where my portfolio credits take me and then decide.
