Chemistry: Straighterline vs. CLEP
#11
Thank you so much for a response. That looks like a great option. I think I may just try to use Straighterline and apply anyway. I feel very stressed lately. This is what I need:

Successfully complete the following ISU courses or their equivalent at another institution:
Agronomy 114: Principles of Crop Production OR
Horticulture 221: Principles of Horticulture (3 credits)
Biology 101: Introductory Biology (3 credits)
Chemistry 163: General Chemistry (4 credits)
Math 140: College Algebra (3 credits)
Statistics 104: Introduction to Statistics (3 credits)

Everything is done, except for the Chem. Unfortunately, my soil chemistry classes do not fit the bill.

Hmm, study.com's Chem is also an ACE class. So it is under the same transfer policy. I do not see any reason for them to not accept either.

Yes, study.com started out just being a CLEP-prep type of thing (also DSST and UExcel prep), but later got ACE-approved for many of their courses. Some of them are not as many credits (study.com's Chem course is 3cr while the CLEP is 6cr), or not the same level (some UExcel's are UL, while the corresponding study.com course is LL).

But all in all, a good way to learn the material if you need more guidance than just taking the CLEP.

I've heard that SL is more "teach to the text" with actual lines coming straight from the textbook, while a CLEP is more general - you could use any college textbook to study for a CLEP. So I would assume that study.com is also more general. But I could be wrong.

I had a 30 minute talk with ISU yesterday. After going around in circles about Straighterline, they said that the problem with SL is that only certain schools can get a letter grade or percent from them, and ISU is not one of them. So even if they accept the course, it will be P/F, regardless that I can get a letter grade from SL. She said she would ask to committee, but that she would prefer me to take my courses from Oregon State University Online. I said that would be $1500-2500. These folks do not understand that people do not have magical cash floating around for one class.

After looking at study.com, it does seem like the best route is to do the $99 route there, for the structured study and relationships, then CLEP out.

What do you all think?

Thanks again for the study.com tip. I decided to use it as my study aid, since it has a CLEP Chem class, with 120 quizzes over 13 chapters. It forces you to learn concept by concept, which is what I wanted. Also, study.com works with a PS4! You can take quizzes and use the controller to control the videos. That is pretty awesome. You can relax while learning, rather than sit with your face to a computer.

The only bad part is that the program randomizes instructors per video. So sometimes you get repeated information, and sometimes the instructor is not as good as others. The other weird thing is, as I am halfway done with it, is that some chapters cover about 8% of the total material, and some chapters are literally 16% (Chapter 5...) of the program. Sort of weird! Chapter 5 alone is 20/120 quizzes.

But the program is great. Thanks again.
