I was in your situation six months ago and here are the changes I made and it’s seemed to have made a big difference because I’ve passed my last 3 exam:

1. Take notes when studying IC or other material.
2. Read aloud (when possible).
3. Focus only on one exam – I only scheduled one exam at a time (it keeps me focus on the current exam).
4. Use additional resources i.e. I’m taking Foundation of Education so I went to the library and checkout one of the books listed on the facts sheet.
5. Read & Understand each term mentioned in the exam specific area by using wiki and/or looked up all the information that is useful for the exam (these are bonus points because you already know they may appear on the exam)
6. Before going into the testing center do a 5 minute meditation/relax; find something that makes you relax and do it prior to taking the test. (Jogging, swimming, etc.)
7. Read the question and all your choices and make sure you understand what they are asking.
8. Don’t think it’s a trick question (I use to think they were trying to trick me) Most questions/answers are straightforward.
9. Don’t rush through the exam – Manage your time but try to relax.

The suggestions here are great and come from experience, I'm sure.

I have a family member who is also an auditory learner. He was trying to take a very involved construction licensing exam and had failed a few times. Once he realized this was his learning style, he took an old-fashioned method of getting a tape recorder and recording the questions and answers and listening to them anytime he could.... in the car, in the morning while getting ready for work, while waiting for meetings or appointments... in other words every waking moment he was not actually working.

He passed the next time he sat for the exam!

Today the technology is better and easier to access. You can get a headset with a microphone and record your voice to a wave file on your computer, you can still go buy a cheap tape recorder at some place like Walmart, or go to an office supply store and get a more high tech (and more expensive) digital recorder where you can record to memory disks that are very similar to the ones you can use in your cameras, not to mention many of the MP3 players also allow you to record and are small and lightweight to carry around.

For those of you who may just be curious what your own learning style is, here is a link to a great site where you can answer some simple questions and get feedback on your own learning style:

Most of us need a blend of learning styles but you may find it interesting, and it just may confirm your suspicions about your own style.

I've been there. CLEP/DSST's aren't for me. I've passed a few but they are not EZ, as far as I'm concerned. I just failed Organizational Behavior by 1, trust me I was ticked and I gave it a good try, even though it was the most boring class I ever studied for. Some on here study for a day or two, take a test and cut a 70.....go figure. If you don't pass this next one, go w/what you said. Take a few online courses. That way, you can build up points through assignments, etc, and one test doesn't hold all the marbles. Once you see the credits add up, then you may feel better and try again. CLEP/DSST's just aren't everyones cup of tea. I walked into Org Behavior very confident and I had good notes and I didn't panic. Until I realized I didn't know THIS subject matter as I had studied. I hear ya screamin......I've taken my last one. I'm not being negative to you, just saying if you feel about doing it another way, go for it. You wouldn't be the first. And you will get there, maybe an hr or two late, but you will ARRIVE! GOOD LUCK

This method of getting college credit isn't for everyone. Even those of us who are doing well with it have our own challenges to work around to make this successful.

I just want to encourage you that when you do find the method and strategy that work well for you, you will have a lot of insights and resources to offer others that will need the information, too.

I'm glad to see that you are not planning to give up; you are still looking for ways to move forward!

SIMPLY_HUGO Wrote:Well I didnt want to tell anyone but I do have a HTYH test tuesday of next week. So as far as the auditory learning goes will see tuesday :|

I took HTYH a few days ago and did very well with just IC and some Google. The audio really works effectively. I failed the same test last year with little preparing (didn't know about IC at the time). Make sure you use the specific forum feedback too, many questions users talked about were on the actual test verbatim

HUGO Go For It!!

Not Everone Is Cut Out For The Testing Route. There Are Many Options Out There Which Are Not Quite As Bad As People Make Them Out To Be. I Wasted Alot Of Time Searching The Boards And Finally Went The Traditional Route. I Am Happy To Say That I Will Have Completed 2 Upper Level Courses At Indiana University This Month. Yes They Ended Up Costing More But In My Opinion, It Was All Rather Painless And I Seriously Learnt Alot. Go For It My Friend. You Won't Regret It!!
