Can I use credits from my existing bachelor's degree at the Big 3?

effdub Wrote:Thanks for all the info, folks!

I've been doing a lot of reading on how the whole process works (and the many options available). And I think I'm going to give the BSBA/GM at Thomas Edison a shot. I live in NJ as well, so I get the in-state tuition for the classes I'd have to take through them. The cost to apply and have my transcript sent to them for review to see what all will transfer is well worth the low cost (about $85 total).

Hopefully soon I'll be posting details about the degree/credit-earning process. Smile

Thanks again!

I think that's a valid move. Typically, BA to BA isn't a gain, it's net zero. I think business and nursing are the two shining exceptions. In any event, you'll find closer to 50 credits in business that you probably DON'T have. All of the 100/200 levels can be CLEPped, and there are exams for the uppers but also access to classes from a variety of sources in addition to TESC.

When you wrap up your BSBA, you might find the masters at Western New Mexico University interesting. They have master's degrees (the cheapest RA distance university in the country right now at under $10,000 for the whole thing) that are split between 2 fields. In fact, you can do a Business-English-Writing masters with them too. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

That's about what I was guessing. I took macro economics for my English BA, but that's about all that will qualify as a business course. Well, I did take a graduate-level management course that might also work. So I've got a ton of core-curriculum work that will need to be done (one way or another). But a big point of all this (for me) is to learn new things. Smile

I'll definitely check that out. Thanks!

It's one thing for people to get testy in the off-topic forum, but it's another when people with valid questions are ridiculed and scared off by rude members who are constantly arguing with each other. There has been some ridiculing and testy exchanges here outside of the off-topic forum, but not nearly at the level of the other forum.

I agree with you. I do read it once in awhile, but it is a very clique-ish group. New members aren't that welcome. Reminds me of a post-grad Mean Girls.

OP, Sorry to add to the hijacking, just had to add my two pennies.

Hey, it's an internet forum. It would be weird without hijacking and niche politics. hehe

You must have poked the hive. hilarious There are a few topics that go round and around....year after year after year after year. How people have all that passion is impressive.
There are -I believe- only 2 women who are frequent posters, myself and one of the moderators, so I'm trying not to read too much into your comment lol :toetap:

You should look into WGU for an MBA or MAT. It's only $3250 per 6 month term for the MBA and you can complete as many credits as you want during a term. Finishing the program in a year is probably very doable. Most of the other programs are $2980 per term and you could possibly get a master's in a teaching field for free with the federal TEACH grant and WGU's scholarship for science majors. Or, just get the MAT in a non-science field (job prospects won't be as good though unless it's special education or ESL) and you'll still get $4,000 off a year with the TEACH grant, but you'll be required to teach in a low-income school for 4 or 5 years.

Fort Hays State University has a lot of graduate degree concentrations and it's cheap. Wayne State College has an MBA for $7500. Eastern New Mexico University's MBA is $5,978; but you're only allowed to take 6 credits per semester at New Mexico colleges under the in-state tuition rates. So, plan to spend at least 2 years on your degree if you attend a New Mexico university.

I had to think about this for a minute, a little slow tonite. I didn't mean to imply the folks on that place were all women, or the women that are on there, were like the females in Mean Girls. Many of the posters, whether male, female, or anything else, just behave like mean, exclusionist highschoolers. (Not you, of course. I've always found your replies gracious, helpful and in good spirits.) I thought about 'poking the hive' but decided it wasn't worth getting worked up over.

Finally got my transcript evaluation completed today.

58 hours of my previous BA are applicable to the BSBA, so that means I have 62 left to knock out. It's both a relief and a daunting task all at once. Smile

I'm not sure if I can bang out that many credits in the first application window, so I may have to apply again and retransfer everything. I wish there was a way to keep the window open longer without forking over tuition to TESC.

Why put yourself through this? Did you look at the MBA from WGU that sanantone mentioned? Probably LESS work and you get the benefit of a MBA!
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

It seems like WGU requires you do the work entirely in their system. If that's the case, then money is the limiting factor for me. I don't have $3250 at the moment to get started.

Granted, I haven't dug very deep in the WGU policies. So if I'm wrong about having to pay full freight through them, please correct me.
