CSU Global Undergraduate Certificates of Completion by CBE

The certs are probably most useful for people with business degrees who want to specialize. I don't really like the sound of Foundations of Accounting because it makes it sound like there are no advanced accounting courses in the curriculum. It'd be cheaper to get the undergraduate certificate in accounting from TESU.

I forgot who it was. Maybe it was Soliloquy, but this person had a good explanation for the difference between academic certificates and professional certifications. Someone with a certification is certified and someone with a certificate of completion is certificated. I noticed that a lot of people think that an academic certificate is the same as earning a certification. A cybersecurity certificate is not as valuable as the CISSP. A project management certificate is not as valuable as a certification from PMI. Academic certificates are just sub-degree-level awards that show that you completed some courses in a subject area.

Do they accept transfer credits for their certificates? I wouldn't want to pay over $1,000 for a course just to earn a certificate.

That was my first question as well. Given that their certificates are earned as a non-degree-seeking (and thus, not admitted to the school) student, I suspect that transfers in aren't part of the deal. Very interested in knowing if anyone has information otherwise.

What value is a certificate such as this to potential employers? Surely something like this isn't competitive with a degree? And, I'm betting it probably can't be used in lieu of when a job posting requires a degree.

It shows self-motivation and ability to stick to a defined plan/path, both of which are things employers look for.

Personally speaking, I went off to University and started my almost completely useless degree in Politics when I was 18. Years later when I managed to get an entry level IT job I went back to university in the evenings to get a Computing certificate to show that a) I had the knowledge & b) I had the commitment to learn. It only took me 2 semesters and I've had many very positive remarks on it. Without it I don't know if I'd have got to the position I'm in, as a consultant, where I can pick and choose contracts.

I can see how someone wanting to get an entry level job in accountancy or wants a promotion but has a Liberal Arts degree, for example, would find a certificate very useful

Our real appreciation for these is that they provide upper level credit applicable to a degree at one of the big three for a very reasonable price. It's also kinda cool to add "Colorado State university" to a resume as a line right under that BS or BA. I actually posted a link on these for you in the other thread as they have quite a bit of CJ courses as well as management and an Emergency Management course.

OK. Pick up a "free" certificate along the way to a BA or BS at the big three. This might bypass the 5 course limit for an NDO.

I agree that it's like adding a specialization to your already-earned degree. For instance, I'm going to be in HR (previously worked in compensation). A lot of what happens there is project-based. So a degree in HR, with a certificate in PM might be useful. I don't need to become a full-fledged Project Manager, that's not the job I'm going for.

So, while I wouldn't necessarily spend a LOT of money on it, having the knowledge and being able to prove it, might be helpful in different circumstances.

And I too immediately thought of having that second school on the resume.

To be honest, you could already take CBEs and transfer them without the certificates.

Of course you could and great value in that, adding a cert from CSU is pretty cool though.
