COSC AS/BS....ease of use, something a little different.
#1
Something a little different. We often look at how to reduce cost and time but I have a student with learning issues who is severely test phobic. I think with very specific instruction a credit by exam would maybe be OK (that's how the Davar Academy stuff makes the list) but what i'm really looking for is ease and confidence building without breaking the bank. Striaghterline and Penn Foster are sort of the nucleus. I figure they can concentrate on one thing at a time and just keep plowing through. In my mind the second half is easy once the AS is accomplished. This person flies airplanes (fully licensed through multi engine and instrument flying) but school was a chore and they lack academic confidence. I do need to keep it affordable and I'm hoping that with a little SL and maybe a couple of Davar Academy courses they will figure out that CLEP and DSST aren't to be feared...but till then.

What would you substitute or change of the below thinking..."ease"/confidence builder. I want to stick with COSC as I know it best and will be the default adviser for this person.

SL Microeconomics and Macroeconomics are probably easier. Both can also be taken at some other places, but SL seems best.

Ed4Credit allows you to take longer to get though courses (4 months), and they allow each exam except the final to be taken 3 times, so that's a huge bonus. You need to pass the final with a 50%, but it is open notes. It reminds me of PF's Financial Management course I took - very similar setup. Also SL I think. The textbook comes with it and is online. And they have a $30 off coupon right now.

My daughter is also doing Charter Oak, and suffers from serious testing anxiety, so I can definitely see what you're looking for.

The things that helped her the most get some confidence was starting out with the free and low cost courses which had NO proctored or timed exam and allowed her to feel like there was no stress. TEEX was the first thing she tackled and it really helped. ALEKS was the next thing and worked out the same way. FEMAs also. Things where she was building confidence in testing without being observed. Shmoop was also good'ish, because she could hide the timer but the fact that the test was timed caused some initial anxiety which she eventually got used to. Then Study.com was next, because it was proctored but at least she could do it at home and she had major test anxiety on the first proctored exam, but it was gone after another test or two (and she only worked on 1 class at a time, finishing 2 a month). She's almost halfway into her degree and just now entertaining the possibility that maybe, somewhere down the road, she might consider going to a testing center. So... ease them into it would be my suggestion. Start off with tests which can be retaken until passed or cost nothing to start so there is no loss fear.

You know, that is an excellent plan, to not only try to get around the anxiety, but to kind of solve the problem in a slow, methodical way. I like this very much, and think it might work for a LOT of people.

And with Study.com, you can pass with about 56-59% on the final, if you are a little careful with quizzes.

Awesome ideas, thanks.

I did start them off on FEMA, the PDS to be exact. So much anxiety I'm surprised he got through it....but did!

What is the going rate for study.com and ed4credit?

Study.com costs $199 for the first two exams in a month, and $70 to add additional ones in the same month.

Ed4Credit is $195 a course, but I think there's a $30 coupon.
