The Essentials of CLEP Testing

CLEP testing refers to the College Level Examination Program offered by colleges and universities across the United States through the College Board. By participating in the CLEP testing program, many students find that they can save both time and money in earning their degrees.

What is CLEP Testing?

The College Board has prepared thirty-four exams in different fields of study. The exams are administered by colleges and universities, and if a student passes the exam the educational facility will award the student college credit. Every college and university has different guidelines concerning which CLEP testing exams they will accept for credit, so you will want to check with an educational guidance counselor at your school about this. CLEP testing offers an excellent way for students with life skills to earn college credit for their experience.

How does CLEP testing benefit students?

One reason why students choose CLEP testing is that it can save a great deal of time. By sitting for a two-hour exam, a student can earn between three to twelve college credits, depending on the exam taken and your school's CLEP testing policy.

Students also find CLEP testing to be cost effective. While a CLEP exam costs only $70, the tuition paid for a college course is considerably greater.

This type of credit by examination also allows students the option of not spending time in introductory courses. Instead, they can focus on more advanced course offerings, or can select from a variety of more appealing electives.

Sometimes young students have trouble with an introductory course early in their college career, and yet that course must be passed in order to earn the degree. With CLEP testing, you can pass the exam and earn the credits you need in order to graduate from your school on time.

Students can also benefit by being able to earn credit for skills learned outside of an educational facility. If you are proficient in a second language for example, you can earn college credit for that skill through CLEP testing.

Where can I find CLEP testing resources?

There are many different sources for CLEP resources, such as study guides and online help. DegreeForum.net offers an online resource where you can ask questions of other students who have taken CLEP exams, and where test-taking tips are offered.

a) Never leave a question unanswered. In fact, even if a person has no idea
what the answer is, and plans to return to the question at the end of the test, he
should first immediately guess a temporary answer and return to it later.
(Personally, if I have to resort to a pure guess, I usually guess the first option.)
On the same token, if there are only two minutes remaining to a test and there
are 25 questions still unanswered (not a very good situation), first guess the
remaining answers, and if there’s still a few seconds, redo as many of those
questions as possible.

b) Be conscious of the time. There are 100 questions and 90 minutes. This
allows almost one minute per question (54 seconds, to be exact).
Therefore, at one hour remaining, one should have already completed at least 35
questions. If one didn’t, he’ll probably have problems later on. At 45 minutes
remaining, at least 50 questions should’ve been answered, and so on.

c) Use hints provided in the questions’ subtle wording. This skill can be
mastered with practice tests, and with a sensitive understanding of the usage of
words. It is difficult to explain, but it is something that anyone who has seen
enough multiple choice test questions understands, and is aware of.

d) Treat the CLEP like an IQ test. There are many questions that can be solved
by simply recognizing which one of the five possibilities stands out, and is
distinguished from the rest.
Take, for example, the following question:
Which of the following does not have an epidermis: a) an elephant, b) a person,
c) a hammer, d) a lizard, e) a monkey.
This question can be solved, even by someone who has no idea what an
epidermis is, by simply realizing that a hammer is different than the rest of the
four options in that it is the only inanimate object from the list.
In the same way, quite often, CLEP questions can be solved by finding
similarities and differences among the options.
