I am taking the Freshman English Composition with essay in a few days. I already took it once a few months ago and easily passed the multiple choice portion, but failed the essay (I think I got a 3 and needed a 4). I'm not a very strong writer, so I can't expect to write a great essay that's going to earn me a 7 or 8. But I think the main problem with my essays on the last exam was that I did not have have enough examples.
I've noticed throughout my years of taking standardized tests (SAT, TAKS, CLEP, etc) that the questions are fairly generalized and you can often use the same historical quotes, examples from books or history, or life experiences across a broad spectrum of essay topics. For example, I could use Thomas Edison's determination to invent the light bulb both in an essay about achieving your dreams as well as for writing about overcoming obstacles.
So, does anyone know of a site that lists useful quotes and historical examples for essay writing? Or, if you know some off-hand, that would be great too. Also, maybe just some general life experiences that I could use. Thanks for any help!
