I just took this test today. Not sure how the score will go, I used Peterson's to practice and cracking the clep to study. Petersons format was true to the test.

I totally think I bombed the essay. Topic was something on the lines of things of today better then years prior, agree/disagree. The only thing that came to mind was education in the eighties vs today. the format was lame, I drew a complete blank. The instructor or room monitor said I couldn't have paper to draw out a draft. I said immediately, the college board does not state you cannot. Her response after checking the site was not clear, so she finally let me have a sheet of paper. I did have some proof subject topics in the body but not as I would have liked if I had enough time to think clearly. Trust me the time does fly right before your eyes. I do hope the observers of the essay take into consideration the time constraint. Definitely practice, practice, practice for the essay. I sure hope the good Lord above helped me do the best i could have with the grace of God to pass this exam. If I failed, I'll have to test out again, this time with the new format.

Is it possible to pass even with a faulty essay?

I'd say so. I've read on these forums that someone admittedly had a poor essay and managed a pass. On the other hand, they also felt really confident about the multiple choice side of the test. Smile

He got to write an essay, so at least the multiple choice went pretty well.

Hello!
I'm about to head over to school to take the English Comp w/essay today.
I feel mostly confident about taking this test.
Any tips on how to overcome drawing a blank with an essay topic?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
thankyou!

Can anyone tell me if the essay portion is timed from the start, while reading the question, or do we get time to think about it before the clock starts? I did the clep practice test and got 6 wrong out of 50 questions. My only concern is the source formating; do we need to learn all the different styles of sourcing?

All the best,

Pete

^^I hope you realize that this is a very old thread! The test is no longer called "English Composition". There are two composition exams offered -- College Composition (with two mandatory essays built into the test; essays are included as part of the test score received at a later date) and College Composition Modular (all multiple choice with two optional essays if required by your school; essays are not included in the immediate test score).

If you are talking about the essays in the College Composition exam, timing is set for each essay section and begins from the time that the screen with the essay prompt appears.

Thanks for informing me about the old thread. Shouuld I have started a new one?
I recall someone saying that the English Composition essays are timed from the moment you start writing (or typing screen appears). In other words, you are able to read the question and brainstorm a little bit about the topic before you lay pen to paper, or finger to keyboard in this case, and are not timed until you start writing. Is this true? Seems wrong. The screen with the essay prompt is the question I assume, so we have to read the question, formulalte an idea, and draft it, all in 30 minutes time. Correct?
Is there a place where I can find some old essay topics? I read the two topics given on the college board practice booklet. cheersmate
