CLEP Degree? Negative People
#1
Like most of us here, we have all completed alot of CLEP/DSST's and are actively pursuing degrees through non-traditional means.

I have a workmate who looks down upon CLEPs. Stating that it is just a "CLEP Degree" that I will be receiving.

Honestly I really don't care what he thinks, I was just wondering if anyone has any smart remarks I can throw at haters when they come along?

Invite him to take a test with you and let him see for himself.Wink

An old wise woman once told me "when people stop saying negative things about you or to you then you worry, otherwise keep your head up and go forward because it only means you are doing something right and they are more than likely jealous." This was about 24 years ago and boy was she on to something.

My experience (gray hairs to prove it) has shown there will always be someone who wants to bust your bubble of happiness (sometimes coworkers, sometimes friends, sometimes family-including spouse) just ignore the comments and keep doing your thing.

Screw him! Get your degree!cheersmate

I think bricabrac said it all. Be careful not to waste mental energy on people and things that are intentionally negative due to their own insecurities...the only purpose these people seem to have is to try and suck the life out of those around them. Don't bite.

It looks like you are progressing nicely toward your degree. Great job!!!

If I invited him to take a CLEP with me I guarantee that his comment will all the sudden be a big joke and he will laugh it off.

I agree with the jealousy quote from that wise woman!

Thanks for the advice!

Yea you are correct. Just right now I have a lot on my plate and I guess the negativity has gotten to me a little bit. I just gotta keep moving "ever upward" as they say at EC. Thanks.

I think the advice you've received is spot on. The best approach is to ignore the guy.
When I was working on my first degree, I had a similar experience. I was finally able to shut the guy up when I pointed out that HIS degree was earned at one of the 2900 colleges that readily accept CLEPs. I also pointed out that testing is not for everyone. Many folks simply can't learn independantly and must sit in a class.

Another point to keep in mind. CLEP testing is a smart cost effective method of earning credit. Your aquaintance likely paid well over $1000 to sit in class, while your cost was $90 for the same course and the same credits.

Keep your chin way up. You have accomplished much and deserve to be proud of yourself.

Good luck to you!

In my experience there are always people who will be negative when you use a different approach. I went through IVF to get pregnant; if I had listened to the people who were against IVF I would not have my beautiful son. I also had gastric bypass surgery; if I had listened to people who were against weight loss surgery I would be 140 pounds heavier and in much worse health. I've learned to do what's right for me, and that includes testing out of as much as I can. I am a Senior VP with my company; I've done very well without a degree but I wanted to get one for my own satisfaction and for future positions. That being said, a lot of what I'm learning is not anything that I've ever had to use in my career. I'm glad there is a faster, less expensive way for me to get through this.

Everyone has given good advice.

Thoughout history, there's always been snobbery when it comes to schools & degrees.

CLEPs are accepted by a large volume of schools as an assessment of knowledge for lower level credit. They're inexpensive and the methods of study can be adjusted to a format that suits the tester's prefered method of learning.

And its not just community colleges or podunk four year schools that take CLEP credit. In Virginia, most of the Colleges and Universities accept CLEPs, including: University of VA, VA Tech, James Madision U, Old Dominion U, Radford, VCU, George Mason, and the list goes on and on... Those are all well respected schools.

Sure, schools like Harvard, Yale, MIT, & Northwestern don't take CLEPS... But if you can A)Can get into those schools and B)afford the $40-50,000/year tuition, it's likely that saving time and money with CLEPs isn't on your shortlist anyway.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.

Bachelor of Science in PsychoRabbitology degree
Master of Education with a specialty in Rabbit-specific destructive munitions (or eLearning & Technology, I forget which)
Doctor of Philosophy in Wile E. Leadership with an area of specialty in Acme Mind Expansion - 2017 Hopefully

I think this says it all. I am a very mature adult who is working on finally getting my degree. I have always been able to get well paying jobs that required I know much, accept much responsibility, make many important decisions, etc. As I sat in B&M classes it urked me that it was for a degree I wanted but that I had no need for this knowledge or that I was required to go through the motions just to get the credits. Online classes made that less of a problem but once I found this site, CLEP and DSSTs certainly has made it much more bearable, more affordable, and will allow me to do more in less time.

What's wrong with that. Ultimately, it is up to you to do the job! The degree just gives you more open doors to prove yourself.

Put your head down, focus on your work and quit trying to sell it. If someone asks for your help- offer it graciously, otherwise it just comes over as obnoxious. So, it is your co-worker who is feeling uncomfortable and is meeting that feeling by putting you down. You need to pull back.

Just being snotty, but Harvard's Extension does allow 12 CLEP credits toward their bachelor's degrees. (LOL big whoop right?)
