Hi everyone,

I am VERY happy to report that I passed the TECEP Business Policy exam with room to spare! Thank God!!! Big Grin It “only” took 3 weeks to get my score, rather than the usual 4 to 5 weeks. Anyway, I wanted to add a few study tips for this exam so you’ll know some of the areas you need to focus on more than others.

Besides understanding the entire strategic management process (environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation & evaluation and control), make sure you learn about:

• SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats)
• PEST analysis (political, economic, socio-cultural, technological)
• Porter’s strategies
• The five generic competitive strategies
• Related diversification and unrelated diversification
• When a company should diversify
• Cross-market subsidization
• Long-term objectives
• Multi-domestic industries
• The value chain
• Fragmented industries
• Corporate culture
• Subcultures
• Entry barriers
• Expanding internationally
• When a company transitions to maturity
• Inside stakeholders
• Benchmarking
• Outsourcing
• Vision

I used both books recommended on TESC’s exam guide: “Crafting & Executing Strategy” by Thompson, Strickland & Gamble (I used this book more than the other one), and “Strategic Management & Business Policy” by Wheelan & Hunger.

One final word of advice: take a good mechanical pencil with you with lots of extra lead because you’re going to need it!!! As others have said before me, there is a ton of writing on this exam, and you don’t get the luxury of typing in your answers!Rolleyes

I took this class at TESC. It required tons of writing for essays in addition to the exam as well. I got an A, but it wasn't without significant effort. And the professor was as uninvolved as they come.

I feel like I understand this materially naturally after having spent 10 years in the real world of business, but the contents of the course smelled more of malarkey than anything else.
