Borrowing exam textbooks practically free
#1
I'd been sweating the cost of getting a number of these textbooks to study for TECEP exams. Last week though I got on a website called Worldcat.org & started checking to see if any of the books were at libraries around me. Earlier this week via interlibrary loan I requested the first book suggested for both the Abnormal Psychology & Psychology of Women TECEP exams - requesting the most recent edition possible. Today the library called me to let me know that the latest edition of the Abnormal Psychology book was waiting for me at the library.

I picked up the book, which was the most recent edition (covers DSM 5) in hardback, & it looks like its never been touched! I have three weeks to read it, & I believe the local libraries here allow two extensions, so a total of 9 weeks.

The best part is, I paid just $5 total to cover the shipping back & forth between libraries! :coolgleam:

That is awesome. It is amazing how many freebies and cool stuff are available out there that people are not aware of.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Our libraries and our librarians are a frequently overlooked resource. Some years back, I wanted a copy of an article from Glamour magazine, of all things, from the early 1980s. I think it was a university library in my state that had it, and I paid next to nothing to get a copy of it. Thanks for showing us another way to lower our costs while getting our education.

I absolutely love our public libraries. Although I understand priorities (like safety, school), it saddens me when library services are cut across the board.

I asked a librarian at my community college if I could check out a certain book. He asked if it was the textbook for a class I was taking. I said yes. He then proceeded to lecture me that I had no business asking to borrow a textbook because by registering for the class, I had the responsibility to pay for any and all materials necessary for the course. He also said that as a matter of policy this particular school's librarians never purchase textbooks used in the school's courses. I wonder how he would have responded to an interlibrary loan request.

He's lucky he didn't talk to me! One of the books I am ordering is also available to the local university students in their women's resource center & the library. It sounds to me like that school is trying to nickle & dime students!

Anyhow, try the local community library, that is how I did my interlibrary loans requests.

Back in the days when you had to fill out paper forms for Inter Library Loans, the local library knew myself and my mom by name because we requested multiple ILL at least once per month. We also consistently requested books from university libraries. Only rarely did we have to pay anything.

To this day, I almost never buy a book, a CD or a DVD its just ingrained in me from all those years of using the library.
