detootie Wrote:Hello all,

This is my first time on this forum, and going by what most of you have written, i believe this would be really helpful. I want to take some few courses to lessen my burden for fall and spring semesters, and i need help on the textbooks i can read apart form the flashcards for the following clep exams

Intro to psychology
Intro to sociology
Us History I
US History II
American Govt.
Human Dev.
Abnormal Psychology.

I would really appreciate it if someone can help me out here, and for those that studied for just 4,5,6 days, did you only rely on the flashcards, or you read other books? And what is Primer?

Thanks, and hope to hear from you guys soon.

Welcome.

You'll probably want to study more than just the flash cards. I haven't taken any of those exams, except I took the UExcel Psychology exam. For that one I just look at the (very specific) study guide that was provided and read about each topic on Wikipedia and made a little study guide for myself. That got me a B, for 3 or 4 weeks of study time. I really like the UExcel exam series because it's more pleasant to schedule through Pearson-Vue than it is through a local college, you also get an actual grade, which is easier to relate to than the score you get from a CLEP.

Generally my advice is to hit up Wikipedia.

This website has lists of resources for many exams.

There's plenty of resources to be found on BitTorrent as well, if you know how to use it.

Your best bet is to get an introductory Sociology book from your local library. Since the CLEP exam is a general test, no specific book is needed. I used John E. Farley's Sociology. It took me about 2 weeks to get through. It is very thorough indeed, all I did was read the book, then go over the glossary and index to make sure I knew all of the terms. My score was a 79... beat that! :p

For Sociology: Barron's EZ-101 Study Keys (a penny on Amazon)
For Psych: REA

For Intro. Psych., Intro. Soc., and HG&D, I used the REA study guide.

For Abnormal Psych. I am going to use the official materials from EC, but I haven't yet so I don't know if that's neccesary or not.

I studied for a week for each of these tests. I used Instantcert, a college textbook, and used the specific exam threads to find out what I was missing and needed to look up on Wikipedia.

I used REA for both of these. I googled/wiki-ed topics that I didn't get for psych, but I used solely REA for sociology.
