Ted, congratulations on passing!

I'm new to this site, and I'm scheduled to take the Bio CLEP in 1 week. This is my first CLEP test, and probably not a great choice for my first one! Anyway, if I use the REA book & study the IC questions, is there a good chance that I'll be able to pass that way? I see that there are a WHOLE lot of IC questions, so I guess I won't be getting a lot of sleep this week, since I know nothing about Bio except what I learned using the REA book!

Hello Melissa -

Welcome to the IC-Forums!!

You're correct, Bio is not a first great choice to make for your first CLEP (unless you have a bio background) so is there another subject that you can opt to take that would be easier such as sociology or psychology?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the welcome. No, there isn't anything else that I'm prepared to start with. I wanted to get the Biology credits out of the way, because, if I don't, I'm going to have to take the class, probably next semester. I REALLY didn't want to have to do that. I've been studying the REA book and I just started working through the IC questions. So, are you saying that there's no way in heck that I'm going to pass this with just those 2 sources of information?? Big Grin

Far be it from me to adopt a pessimistic point of view, however there is a greater reality at work here too, that being that the BIO CLEP can be a bear and perhaps it would be prudent to devote a little bit more time and/or resources to your Bio quest. Good Luck!!

Hello, I just passed the Biology CLEP with a 71 about two hours ago! This was my 10th CLEP exam and by far the most challenging one I have prepared for. I passed all 9 of my other exams using only InstantCert and the Official Study Guide questions. This one was different. It took me nearly a month of study as follows:

I went through all of InstantCert's material twice, compiling a 118 page study guide from the questions I got wrong. I even did a couple of sections three times. Then I rented the Standard Deviants video from NetFlix (good overview). After that I crammed from my study guide before taking the practice test and still only got a 58%.

At this point I followed the advice of others in this thread and purchased the Peterson's practice tests. They were extremely helpful and I recommend them to anyone taking this test. The actual exam was pretty close in difficulty to the first two Peterson's tests. The third Peterson's test was way harder than the actual exam. Don't worry if you bomb that one. I also used Wikipedia to learn the major Phyla and the PBS flash thing on Mitosis vs. Meiosis that several people mentioned.

Even with all that study, I didn't think I would do nearly this well. I am really happy to have this one behind me. I enrolled at Excelsior College a few weeks ago. I now have 84 official credits towards my BGB.

36 to go! Good luck to everyone,
Chris

Congratulations, Chris! And thanks for the information. I haven't yet decided whether or not I'm going to risk taking the test next week or if I'm going to reschedule it. I took the first Peterson's test last night (thanks to everyone for the information!), and I scored a 60. I'm going to spend the next day or so studying the stuff I got wrong, and then take the second practice test & see what happens.

That's not bad! FWIW I scored 72/72/50 on the Peterson's tests, but that was after I was already done studying IC, Standard Deviants and the websites. The Peterson's tests were the last "new" material I covered. If you've got a week left I believe you have a good chance of passing. Best of luck to you if you decide to take it! By the way, I also chose to do a notoriously hard exam first--the 6 credit accounting exam. I enjoy a challenge Big Grin

Well, I took all 3 of the Peterson practice tests, and got 60/59/41. I wasn't scheduled to take the Biology test for another week, but, I got sick of looking at the material, and didn't feel that anything else was really sinking in. So, I figured, what the heck, I'm just going to see if I can take the test today instead. After all, I'm either going to pass or fail, so I'm just not going to freak out about it. I passed with a 62!!! This was my first CLEP, and I was certain I had failed, because the majority of the test was stuff I hadn't studied at all. I must just be good at guessing! hilarious

Wow congratulations, Melissa. I knew you could swing it! Most CLEPs are much easier that Biology so you're going to be laughing through the next few. What's next? If you're looking for easy credits I recommend Management or Marketing. I got 77 and 78 on those after studying InstantCert, but I probably could have taken them blind.
