Ok, so some news to make you all value testing out a little more. I teach at a community college. Our tuition rates went up last fall by about $14 a credit hour and now we just received word our tuition will go up another $10 a credit hour this coming fall. That means our 3 credit courses will run just shy of $200 each. That is all lower level credit and a lot are non-transferable, so CLEP/DSST and even ECE's at UL credit are looking better and better from a purely economic standpoint, not to mention faster and better for learning according to the article posted last week. As an instructor I truly believe in the value of exams, especially exams that make you think that's why my exams are all mixed format, so I know it works. Keep up the great work and hopefully this news will give some of you a little extra motivation towards getting your exams done.

I also teach at a community college and our tuition went up as well. We are now just over $160 per credit. It's crazy! AND, we charge $9 per credit to transfer in any credit- prior schooling or CLEP. So, that CLEP exam will cost you an extra $27 to put on your transcript! It's very expensive, and it's not always worth the cost or trouble.

Costs here locally at Broward College are $94.64 per credit hour for residents and $330.85 for nonresidents; at Florida Atlantic University (a 4-year school) undergraduates pay $159.81 for residents and $604.39, and graduate level is $319.96 for residents and $926.42 for nonresidents -- and these are state schools, which are considered to be a bargain. For example, Nova Southeastern University, undergraduate level per credit hour is $575.
Special THANK YOUs to CLEP, DSST, ECE and most importantly INSTANT CERT for making this all possible.

Wow, your guys' are expensive! In state tuition at Columbus State is $79/cr hr. Still more expensive than CLEPs, but some of the cheapest I've seen!

New semester just started at work, and my disilusionment with formal education has deepened. La-De-Da professors, who are just about the same age as the students, have now decided that college courses don't need to have homework, use textbooks nor even require students to show up to class. In one course, the prof gives a "class participation grade" but get this, he announced to the class that no one will lose points based on lack of class participation, but those students who do participate will gain points....
oooh, then theres the sociology professor who says that they will not have to write a single paper, rather, they only have to make some notes and give her an idea of what they WOULD HAVE written, if they were to actually write something.
It seems like the only thing these students will be graded on is whether or not they sucesfully registered the course.
Yet, here we have tuition increases and an even greater emphasis from, it seems, everybody, on going to college and getting an education.
I'm starting to thing that CLEP et. al. might actually be equal of educational value as attending class... not to imply anything so great about CLEP either.
I have never heard about any online school, not even the ones maligned the most, that require less from their students than the dozens of B&M, traditional colleges that I have worked in.
Whether dl course or CLEP, nontraditional is the way to go.... just get your undergrad finished ASAP. You aren't missing much, anyway. I promise.

We have a second CC that is cheaper- it's $86 in district, which means a small geographic area, it's more expensive for instate/out of state. However, they have an awful CLEP policy, capping out at 15 credits, and some of the 6 cr exams are not accepted- of those that are, it's only for 3 cr. So, strictly cost-wise, they are not cheaper than the more expensive CC (where I work) that has a better CLEP policy. In fact, my CC's CLEP policy is better than TESC's, but the cost is awful...especially with the transfer fee of $9 per cr. All in all, for someone starting from scratch, the big 3 are likely the least expensive when you cross the CLEP policy restrictions against the tuition and/or transfer fees. If you start taking classes instead of CLEPs, the cost advantage slips away.

I had a similar experience at my local university. Then I discovered DL and voiced my opinion with my shoes. Onward and upward to better things.

Our CC system costs approx 650 to 700 per class in state. It is very expensive for CC credits. But the cost far out weighs the costs of the local 4 yr colleges and univesities. Believe me I used our CC system to the fullest because it was my cheapest option to getting some college credits done.

The only CLEPs of mine that they accepted were Soc & Math. But fortunately they don't have any prereqs for any of their CJ courses, so I was golden
(What really made me grrrr was looking at their AP transfer list as opposed to the CLEP one... don't get me started :p )
