Same here, I never had to send TESU any actual evidence of high school graduation. While I think I had to fill a section on the application attesting that I had completed high school, there was no further verification. To my knowledge, my old high school does not participate in any clearinghouse or electronic verification system either.

I'm 40 and live outside of the US but would like to get an online degree from an institution registered in the US.

I completed high school and did some tertiary level courses over 20 years ago- lost transcripts due to moving around a lot, and in order to get copies, I have to submit forms in person (can't travel due to pandemic).

So basically, I have no transcripts, can I even enroll in any uni-level courses or should I get an online high school diploma from somewhere like Penn Foster etc?

I'd like to get a degree in psychology, liberal arts, or English and ideally would like to complete it in less than 2-3 years, for under 5000 dollars in total if possible, then continue my studies and get a Masters.

I would really appreciate any advice from this forum.

Thank you!

Maybe instead of trying to jump through 20 hoops, you should just take the GED online and move on if you can:

Hi!
I think you have to be a US citizen. Sad
I had the chance to speak to an advisor at COSC today, and I can study there without any transcripts, I just need to gain some college credit via one of the providers they list, such as Sophia or study.com.

(05-15-2021, 01:34 PM)rachel83az Wrote: In that case, you're going to get the majority of your credits through Sophia and Study.com. But, before you start taking them, you're going to want to check out TEL (https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/TEL_Learning) and ONU (https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Ol...University) Olivet won't let you take classes without proof of graduation OR attendance at another American college/university. So, what I would recommend that you do, is to take 1-2 courses at TEL and then enroll at Olivet for the slightly cheaper courses of $150 vs. $200USD. But, if you like TEL, you could totally continue with them.

You will need to take 8 classes at TEL and/or Olivet for a total of at least 24 credits. You don't need to start taking anything right now, simply look at the course descriptions and choose what attracts you the most.

Once you have your list of 8 courses, come back here and let us know what you've chosen. Then we can further help you on your journey and tell you what you do (and do not) need to take.

You'll definitely need to head on over to Sophia.org and sign up. From there, you would start taking courses that do NOT overlap with the ones you chose at TEL/ONU. (We can help you with figuring this out.) For instance, you would not take US History at Sophia if you decided to take it from TEL. I would recommend that you NOT take English Comp at Sophia either. Either ONU or Study.com would be easier than those particular Sophia courses.

You don't necessarily have to take Sophia.org courses in any specific order but there are recommendations for courses that should be taken close to one another at: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sophia.org As outlined in the course-taking strategy section, it's also recommended that you only take 1 class at a time that has any Touchstones (assignments that need to be turned in) because you are only permitted to take 2 courses at a time.

You can also get a good idea about the requirements here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...ts_Roadmap

Also, if you are going with COSC: do NOT take the TEEX courses. They are NOT accepted. CSM Learn is accepted but not as a math credit. InstantCert is also NOT accepted. The only alt credit sources accepted by COSC are here: https://www.charteroak.edu/catalog/curre...r_inst.php

I had a chance to speak to a COSC advisor today, and I'm definitely going with them. I don't need to show any transcripts, and I just need to take enough college credit from Sophia or any providers on their list--- so thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

I took a look at TEL, and here are the 8 courses I thought looked interesting:

1. Intro to Communication
2. Microeconomics
3. World Civilisations
4. Principles of Psychology
5. Language and Composition
6. American Government
7. Qualitative Analysis
8. Literature and Composition

Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what help you need, but I would say that the school you choose to use to get the transcript is as important as the course you take.  Make sure you go to the partners list, and look up every school, and see what they have before deciding (and you can choose between all of the partner schools for each individual course).

For instance, Greenville University makes a notation on your transcript for every course, that they are TEL courses - so you do NOT want to use them for anything.

Something quirky: MATH1103: Quantitative Analysis I comes in as MATH1103: College Math at MACU, MTH113: Intro to Mathematics at HLGU, MAT130: Contemporary Mathematics at Lane, MATH-1173: Quantitative Reasoning at OC, MATH1315: Contemporary Math at McM, or MTH145: Math in the Real World at York.  So you'd want to decide which course you want it to look like before taking it.  But MATH1203: College Algebra comes in as College Algebra at every school.

Just check the equivalencies before you make decisions: https://www.tellearning.org/partners/

If you take all of those at MACU, you'd get:

  1. COMM 1103 Fundamentals of Public Speaking
  2. ECON 2403 Microeconomics
  3. HIST 1103 History of World Civilization I
  4. PSYCH 1103 General Psychology
  5. ENGL 1103 English Comp I
  6. POLS 1103 American Federal Government
  7. MATH 1103 College Math
  8. ENGL 1203 English Comp II
These are all pretty solid choices when it comes to general education requirements. As far as I can tell:

Communication requirement: met (Intro to Comm, Language & Composition, Literature & Composition)
Ethics: not met
US History/Government: met (American Government)
Non-US History or Culture: met (World Civilizations)
Global Understanding: not met
Literature and fine arts: not met
Social/behavioral sciences: met (Microeconomics)
Mathematics: met - probably (Quantitative Analysis)
Natural Sciences: not met

For what hasn't been met by TEL:
Ethics: Intro to Ethics @ Sophia
Global Understanding: Should be filled by either Environmental Science or Approaches to Studying Religions @ Sophia
Literature & Fine art: Art History I or Art History II @  Sophia
Natural Sciences: Science w/ lab @ Study.com. "Biology 101L: Intro to Biology with Lab" is supposedly pretty easy.
In progress:

Anyways, No high school won't be an issue for now (yet)...  First and most importantly, setup an Acclaim/Credly account to store all your credits and work on the following courses in this particular order:

1) Invest in a second monitor for multi-tasking when you're working on ACE alternative credit courses
2) Sign up for CSM Learn Course $39 and TEEX $75 Death Investigation & Cybersecurity 101, 201, 301 (for gen ed/free electives)
3) InstantCertCredit.com - Take American Government and Spanish I (and more if you want - for gen ed/free electives)
4) Sophia.org, take everything from them but English I & II, College Readiness, and foundation courses (unless you want to)
5) When you're almost done with these courses, Message me or update this thread and I'll tell you the next steps

Basically, before you begin, you need to decide on the degree you want and the school you want it from. You can then start taking remaining credits to complete your degree of choice. If you haven't decided on the degree or school, my recommendation is that you can take courses that will transfer into the Big 3 AND the competency based education providers. So that means use more RA, ACE and skip NCCRS for now...

It depends on where you're going to be going. For someone going to UMPI, take English from them. Otherwise: CLEP, TECEPs, ONU, or TEL Learning are all possible choices. Study.com also works for COSC and EC, though they accept different courses for their requirements.

There is also the credit requirements, of course. The catalog says that a concentration needs to be 36 credits or more with at least 18 being upper-level. ( https://www.charteroak.edu/catalog/curre..._study.php ) I think this means that, for a dual-concentration, you split the requirements so it'd be 9 upper-level credits (3 classes) in Psych and 9 UL credits in Business. But it could also mean that you need 6 classes each in Psych and Business.

In the meantime, you can certainly start taking the Sophia.org classes alongside a TEL class or two. It's nice to have other classes to break up the monotony so that you're learning about more than JUST math or American government or whatever. I would recommend starting with an easy class at Sophia to get the hang of things. Either Environmental Science, Intro to IT, or Human Biology are good. These won't count towards your science requirement but they are easy classes that WILL count towards your total credit requirement. Make sure to do Greek Philosophers before Intro to Ethics at Sophia. Greek Philosophers makes Ethics a lot easier.
