Best Cake Ever
#11
Hi Burbuja,

Off topic, but in your signature, did you get your MBA from COSC too? My mind is not as good at remembering things these days! I think I am on circuits overload.

Thinking about an MBA in the very near future. Glad you have all your ducks in a row and I hope you find a wonderful house for you and the hubby. I used my i-phone to video the houses and then when I came back it helped me remember the homes in case I wasn't sure I wanted to make an offer. Another thing that helps is getting the listing with a floor plan. If that's not available, then have your hubby stretch out his arms as a "measure" if you are not sure all your furniture will fit. Texting pictures back home to people with an approximate measurement will help down the road when you are trying to figure out what furniture to take and which to sell/donate.

I am off tomorrow and I can't wait to make that cake!

YUM!

Thanks,
T

And the good part is that coconut is the new health food, so that means this cake is health food!!! Smile :p

Hi! My MBA is a bit different than the traditional one, and it's not a quick program - it's a full 24 months with literally no breaks other than Christmas and Spring Break. It's a dual-language (half of the courses are in Spanish) Global MBA with a focus in emerging markets. It's a joint program between two Jesuit universities, Regis in Denver and ITESO in Guadalajara, Mexico: Online Global MBA in Emerging Markets Degree Program ? Regis University CPS

One of the reasons I really like this degree is that it shows international acumen and proves my Spanish fluency while still marking off the the "has an MBA" check box. If I were to do a different MBA, I would do either one of two things: 1) Find the quickest, cheapest MBA just to get it done or 2) Find a specialty MBA that can set you apart from the crowd or highlight a specific area of interest. In my case, it's really helped me shift my career from primarily N. America-focused to international. (My title now is VP of Global sales and my new job starting March 5 is Head of Global sales for a prominent medical organization) So, yes, my MBA did help, but of course having lived out of the country early in my career and my Spanish and Portuguese were equally as important, so it's really only one piece of the picture, albeit an important one.

Thanks for the in detail reply Burbuja! That's fantastic that you can speak those languages! I am semi-fluent in French, but my major is nursing. My goal is to teach. I think I can do that for a long, long time if I like it and I truly enjoy helping people. Nursing in a hospital often involves a lot of physical labor, which I can't see lasting for a long long time. As I get closer to finishing my BSN, and if you are still on here…I'd love to pick your brain even more about MS and MBA's.

I'm always happy to help!!! I learned Spanish by living in Mexico for 6 years, but I've learned Portuguese through a combo of self-study and classes. I think I could have done quite a bit more with self-study alone, but since I needed Portuguese for work (Love my Brazilian partners, but they are very insistent on business in their language!) so I sped up the process by getting one-on-one lessons. For nursing, I would imagine that some Spanish would help, depending on where you're at.

And don't worry... I think I'll always be on here, but if not - shoot me a PM and we can connect on LinkedIn. And if you're not yet on LinkedIn, don't wait!! Just do it!!!! It's a wonderful and free way to network and find jobs. My new amazing job was a result of being on LinkedIn. Smile

Ok,Ii am thinking this will be the perfect cake to make for my DD's birthday. A couple of questions. Did you use a white cake mix? Did you use canned frosting? Please forgive if the answer sounds anything like "No! Never! How could you even suggest that!!!"

Burbuja, I had to share with you about your fantastic cake. Yes I made it for DD's birthday. She loved it, said it is her new favorite. I took home some for my next door neighbor (who is suffering from bone cancer) and his wife. This morning I woke up wishing I had brought home some for me. (One piece was not enough!) So, I went to town and brought ingredients for cake number two. All assembled in the fridge. I called my neighbors to ask them if he felt strong enough to come over for supper tonight. No, felt like a train wreck. I asked if he liked the cake I brought over last night. He said yes, it was really good! I said I will bring you some more, I have a fresh on in the fridge. His wife said, "Bring the recipe when you come!!!" So your cake is making the rounds! To the rest of you, it really is the best cake ever!

Wow, that's really interesting. Where did you live in Mexico and how did you end up there? I am going to private message you. And yes, I am on LinkedIn…I'll need to grab your info from our private message. Thanks so much! Hope the house hunting is going well?

Sorry I took so long to reply - the move to Chicago has got me totally behind on everything. I'm so glad that you made the cake and it turned out well. The answer is that you can make either homemade or from a box… I don't think it makes a huge difference. I do use canned frosting because I'm terrible at making it.

I lived in Guadalajara from 1996-2002 and loved it. I ended up going there because my ex's family was from that area. I had a strong desire to live out of the US and even though my ex wasn't initially interested, I convinced him and dropped out of college to do it. It seemed like the "wrong" decision to all of my friends at the time, and yes it was a bit crazy, but it has really helped my career and personal development in the long run. A move out of the US is so enriching just to fully immerse yourself in another culture. I would recommend it to anyone!

See you on LinkedIn!

Thanks so much Burbuja Smile Yeah, I married a Brit….so the language won't be as cool to learn (although I can figure out what part of England people are from really easily now)! But yeah, being that he's British that means the whole EU is a lot more feasible to travel and live in down the road Smile I would TOTALLY live in a different country! I love learning about and immersing in other cultures.

Just LinkedIn with you now…we have an astonishing amount of common trends!

I love InstantCert! I have met the most amazing, knowledgable and helpful people on here!

All the best,
Tara
